Was at a mates gig recently, and wasn't there on contract so I decided to try different stuff, played with my new metz handheld flash a bit. A lot are standard shots anyway, difficult enough to change gig shots without making it look stupid I think, maybe not. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
I was also a little drunk.

love the last two, but then again, unless theres movement in the photo it doesnt really do it for me when it comes to gigs, i love the last, the hair really gives it energy.

That first one is excellent - really like the b/w conversion of it.

No.3 for me, very 'The Clash'. Classic rock shot :)

Yeah I knew I wasn't being super original there, just couldn't remember where I'd seen it.

    Cheers for the replies guys.

I like them. Maybe running some of the b&w's through noise ninja would help (number 3 in particular). Oh..number 2 ftw.

Im liking 4 and 5. Nice use of negative space in 4. Great stuff Paudie... where was the venue? Boatclub again?

Yeah nice shots... loving no 1 and no 4.. the lighting in the first is class and the b&w suits it, and no 4 also for the negative space thingy mentioned above..

Cheers guys, I kinda kept the noise in 3 on purpose, going for that raw feeling.
Whats FTW? acronymfinder gave 20 different answers :P

The gig was in Baker Basement (below the wicked chicken)

Boatclub is closed for good :(

The B+W ones work really well. Nice stuff.

No 4 is quite dramatic.Like the first two B+Ws.Whats your best settings for doing gig shots Paudie, just stsrted taking some recently with an olympus-not-quite-a-compact-not-quite-a-dslr with hefty zoom(i take them from the crowd) and not bad features.DO you use a high ISO?Tryin to pick up as much advice at the mo to perfect it

No. 2 also gets my vote. If I was the guitarist I'd be exceptionately vain and frame that.

The settings are pretty bad.(as in I'd prefer if they were better :) )
I always use at least ISO800 and 1600 a lot of the time as well.
F2.8 and 1/60 s. If I can I will decrease shutter speed as opposed to aperture as personally I generally don't like motion blur in my shots.
ISO800 isn't too bad on my 20D but 1600 is starting to push it a little and you definitely see a big difference between these two.

Starting to use a handheld Metz flash more and more. I'd bounce it off the floor/roof/walls. Never direct in their face. Gives kinda moody shadows, although generally flashes at gigs are a no-no.

But a slower shutter speed will cause motion blur

I'm thinking of getting one of those gorilla mini-tripods for the flash. They stick to anything (well, what I've seen on the web does). They could be used to put the flash anywhere.

For bands, i like where the flash is direct onto the face, but from the side and a good ways back. If you then shoot from the front, the shadows are super.

ok, so the focus is a little out, and the mike needs to be toned down, and I need to shoot when there a little more space between him and the mike and.........

but you see what I mean :-)

The second option is to have someone there with you to hold the flash. That's the best, especially if they know where to hold it etc.

Mele: I said "in general" :P there's always room for a decent blurred shot, thats why I have some above :D
But you start posting too many and I may have to mark you

Bp: I meant the opposite as in preferably 1/100 or 1/200. I always get those things mixed up, faster apertures, lower apertures, lower shutter etc.

I find ignoring me is your best bet.

Nice shot btw Merv, thats exactly how a flash should be used at a gig.
    Rock on moody shadows.

I've noticed that loads of venues have blue walls and bouncing off of them gives some crazy light sometimes.
Although this is not as bad as the time I was snapping away happy thought I was bouncing off of the wall then realised the PA was beside me and covered in black furry carpet stuff and not reflecting any light at all.

Good man Paudie, well done there
