    Hi all,

I went down to take a look at that new gym in Smithfield this evening. It just opened yesterday; it's basically in the basement in that Smithfield Market development.

Only one catch - first year's membership is €1300, with a "special offer" of €1150 if you join now... I notice they deliberately avoid mentioning the price on any of their marketing stuff.

Am I just mad, or is this way too expensive?

Seems very expensive. What are the facilities like? I presume it's pretty big and well kitted out for that kind of money.

Your off your rocker if you pay that money for a gym. Unless they supply house cleaners and agree to pay your mortgage too.
Dublin 7 and surrounds is teeming with good to fair gyms all at reasonable rates.
They have a brass neck. I used to rob the lead out of the old Jamesons factory down there when we were kids.. bloody state of the place now :(

Well it's all new, the pool is quite big and they made a big deal out of their sauna room and "free motion" equipment, but to be honest the area with the cardio and weight equipment is disappointingly tiny. Oh and they're still missing a load of equipment, like the spinning bikes. They seem pretty desperate to get people to join before Christmas: maybe they'd be open to haggling?!

Any recommendations? I've just moved into the area so I don't know what's on offer. I'm looking for somewhere close to Smithfield Market (it's hard enough motivating yourself to go without having to walk for miles through the weather and the Christmas shoppers  )

they're aiming it more for lawyers and barristers and hoping to create a David Lloyd type thing I think

    Power House - Domnic Street

    Olympus - Capel Street

Hercules - Lurgan Street (just off North King st)

Atlas - North Fredrick street (Mickk's gym right?)

    Lower end of the scale:

    Phibsboro Gym

    Cuts on Blackhall st

Thanks for that, Jon. I'll take a look at those; hopefully they're a little more affordable!

Let us know eoghan how much each of them are when you find out? I'm moving jobs up to Smithfield in mid-Jan, so will be moving gyms as well, to one of those on that list from Jon

I went in 2 months ago to their sales suite after hearing they had some 'amazing offers'.

I was told 1200 euro if I signed up on the spot. I laughed at her and said no thanks.

1200 is OUTRAGEOUS! There's nothing special about the place at all, from what she told me.

I joined Crunch premiere in Temple bar and i'm very happy with it, I never have to wait for equipment to become free, even at 6-7pm on weekday evenings. They just expanded their weights section too. The decor is gorgeous and it's very clean. And you get free membership to the Dun Laoghaire Crunch included in the price.

Also good is the Fitlinxx system, which I don't think the Smithfield place has.

    Hi there,

Has anyone actually joined the new gym in Smithfield, oneescape? If so, can you offer opinions about it?

Actually rang about membership here: special joining fee for first 500 members €175 and then €90 a month - sorry but no thanks, even though its handier to get to for me. Just letting yis know

That's the same offer they have had on since around September when I went in to enquire about the gym! So they still don't even have 500 members!

I can see this place going bust very quickly, or having to take a loss and slash their membership prices. They should really have researched the market a bit better...they would really be better suited to a much more affluent area to be charging that price.

Do they even have free parking? I'm sure people who don't live in the city centre won't be keen on having to get the Luas down to smithfield, when they can join somewhere equally swanky - Crunch in temple bar - in the city centre..

That is crazy. I think they will find it difficult to compete with some of the newer low-cost gyms. such as Carlise and Westpoint. Admittedly these are out of town, and a bit of hassle for those living/working in town.

i go to Carlisle - it's nearby and handy. It has stacks of basic cardio equipment (concept 2's, treadmills, Bikes, ellipticals). A large enough free weights area, and every weight machine you can think of. 2 cable crossovers. 3 squat racks, 2 smith-machines.

It costs 400 euro - FOR THE YEAR!

The staff are ... well, 400 euro worth, and some basic, fundamentals of a good gym are missing, but if you're self-motivated enough, then this is far and away worth the money. I mean, what can 1200 buy you - do they lift the weights for you??? :D

I also found Cruch to be very good, I haven't been in the last month- work has been mental. Kinda dreading going back this month with all the New Year's people signing up
