i have a problem, i have a htpc in a press. the press's doors are closed because its in the living room.

the htpc outside the press has adaquate cooling, however when in the press the fans just vent the air into the press,

i have cut some circular holes in the back of the press, but the hot air is not leaving, i want to use the pc fans outside the case to pull the hot air out.

do any of you know of a product that allows the use of pc fans externally ?

Try to imagine the press as being another PC case. Is any fresh, cool air getting in to the press anywhere? Naturally yoiu will need air to get into the press to create any kind of circulation, having just an exit is not enough.

Once you have fresh air getting into the press, all you really need to do is duct the hot air from the PC out of the press ithrough holes you have already made for good cooling.

actually from what i can remember the old pcs used just fans pushing air out so that the small gaps in the case would cause a draft and as it was concentrated it would be much cooler...

Would be better of having a incomming and outgoing air chanel like SC said. plus old computers never ran hot like todays computers..

This maynot be a ideal idea, and not the cheapest. But have you considered watercooling it ?

i agree that i should look at the press as being another case,

my real question is how can i power a silent pc fan independently of a pc

Yes they did, they had adequate airflow for their (rather paltry) heat dissapation. TBH a modern NB would nearly throw out more heat than a Katami or low clock speed Coppermine core PIII. Add in the modern CPU, graphics card, RAM (Yes RAM puts out a fair dollop of heat too!) and hard disk and you have a whopping difference in thermal dissapation.

how far away are the fan(s) from the case going to be?

    You could:

Get a 12V powersupply from Maplins etc
You could get a 5v fan and run it from USB, or run a loud 12V fan at 5v!
You could just wire it to the board of the HTPC and extend the wires with shrinkwrap
Connect it to a spare ATX power supply.

How about some pics of your setup? Im standing firm on getting an effective airflow in there rather creating a vacuum.
