Camera Advice

    Hi folks,

I'm getting new digital camera for christmas and was hoping you experts could steer me in the right direction.

I want to spend around €300 and, in addition to good picture quality, the following features are important to me:

    - Optical zoom - at least 3x, but the more the better
    - Lag time between pressing the button and actually taking the shot
    - Decent battery life
    - Takes decent movies with sound
    - Cycle time - being able to take a number of photos in quick succession
    - Takes SD cards
    - Relatively compact. Not too bulky
    - Some manual control - not totally point and shoot
    - 5MP at least

It's going to be used primarily for taking pictures of the family. My current camera takes crappy pictures indoors so something that has a decent flash would be good.

The lag time is really important too... it seems to take my current camera a hundred years between pressing the button and actually taking the shot - even when pre-focussed. And if you want to take another shot quickly afterwards, that's another billion years at least! It's very frustrating when trying to catch a baby smiling!

I'd really appreciate some recommendations. My experience is that the above ''requirements'' don't narrow the field down very much - there are a million cameras out there. I have no idea what brands have reputations for taking good pictures.

    Thanks in advance folks,

    Di11on

    Canon Powershot A710?

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/382392/art/canon/powershot-a710-is.html

    I've got the A610 & it's a great little camera.

(BTW I'm not endorsing the website, that's just for an example!)

Thanks Peter... have definitely been looking at the Canons... it's probably what I'll end up going for... can't go wrong, I guess.

I'm far from an expert, but I'd recommend the Fuji S5600 which I've seen around for €299, lovely camera I think.

Wow - the Fuji S5600 looks like quite a camera alright... at Pixmania it's only €216. It's a bit too bulky though.... looking for something a little more compact. Doesn't have to be ultra slim... just not bulky.

    Anyone else any recommendations.

If I said I was buying the Canon A710, would anyone tell me not too?

You can't go wrong with any of the A-brand camera's... just don't buy Lidl, Aldi and other cheapo brands even if those cams offer more megapixels, because that doesn't say anything about the quality.
Also have a look at the Panasonic Lumix range, they have some nice compacts and prosumer camera's.
