Opinions on Aldi digicam as companion to DSLR

Hi all. I'd welcome your opinion on this.

I have a 400d as my main camera, but I'd also like to buy a pocket sized camera that I can bring to gigs, sporting events etc where I can't lug a big camera bag around - as a companion in my arsenal - not a replacement.

Aldi have 7 megapixel jobby for 180 quid. See here. Whil I wouldn't expect it to be of the highest quality in the world, 180 quid seems like a good price for a 7 megapixel cam.

Can anyone suggest any reasons why I'd be wrong on that, and if so suggest an alternative within the same price-range ?

    Thanks muchness in advance

aldi/lidl cameras are absolute rubbish, my dad foolishly bought one before...they are horrid and from the ones i've used would probably be the worst possible for low light, draw a picture...i'd probably look better :D

Ironically, it is really your SLR with various lenses you would want in these situations. About the only time to bring a P&S might be a night out on the town where you dont want your expensive camera to become the victim of drunkenness

Argos are selling the Canon A420 at the moment for 1/2 price - basically trying to get rid of discontinued stock. I picked on up yesterday for the same reason (well not quite - I wanted to get it for the wife and for occasions when I didn't wat to lug the whole bag around).

Anyway, 110 EUR for the camera which is 4MP, 3x Optical.

That canon would be a much better option than the aldi job. Don't be fooled by megapixels, they mean nothing if the sensor is small, and the lens is crap, and thats not even getting into sensor quality and software running the camera and all that. You can get very good 5 MP cameras from the well-known brands now for under €200, simply because megapixels are driving the market, and D-SLR's are so cheap. 10MP now in a point and shoot is pointless, but the advantage to it is that they have to sell that cheaper than a €700 D-SLR, and as a result of that, they have to sell a 5MP camera for less again.
