Reporting the Dublin water cut-off

RTÉ and other media outlets have been making a big song and dance about the water cut-off in Dublin over the past few days. As far as I'm concerned, it's not worthy of most of the attention it got.

We all have our water cut off from time to time. It happens and we get on with it. Last year, Carlovians spent 40 days on a 'boil water notice'. Nobody made a big deal, and nobody really needed to. People survived.

So why was there such a big deal made this time? 100,000 people is larger than your typical number, however that doesn't mean that they couldn't last 24 hours without tap water. But at a guess, I would assume that if 100,000 people in County Galway were left without water, the story wouldn't be as high profile.

It seems that if it affects Dublin, then it's big news. Half a inch of snow in Dublin will get wall to wall coverage and the front page of all the papers but a foot of snow in elsewhere will barely get a mention.

The coverage on Thurs/Fri was bit excessive alright, though I enjoy listening to ill-informed punters having a moan. ps it should noted of course that as the national media is Dublin located it means anything that annoys Dubs will always get undue coverage.

It was a bit much. And oddly enough, I'm in one of the affected areas and haven't had a bother with the water!
