I'm about to reinstall windows again on my laptop. I always say to my self this time i'll setup everything and ghost so i don't have to go trough the whole setup process again. The ghosting never happens.

I normally always disable quite a few services (start>run>services.msc), turn of system restore, automatic updates (i like to do them manually), turn of indexing.
And thats about it i think.

I'd like some input from people on what they have done to make their pc's/laptops run smooth and fast.

Turn off the Indexing Service on your hard drives (unlesss you use search a lot), if you haven't already.

    Few suggestions -

Microsoft bootvis - re-arranges boot sequence more efficiently

A program called cacheman - optimises boot up memory usage.

http://www.musicxp.net has a pretty decent list of optimisations.

One or two of them are aimed towards computer musicians, but the rest are all just focused on getting more performance in the areas you actually use. I usually consult it with any new XP install.

I need to reinstall Windows XP. Mine is f***ed. Any good sites that will walk me through the process? Also, I know the answer to this question is (probably) no but I've over 15GB of stuff in My Documents folder that I want to keep. Any way of retaining it through the install?

Backup to dvd's or a second hard disc (borrow a external one maybe?) other than that for a fresh install i think you loose everything.

Thanks for the tips sofar, keep em coming :D

Providing you dont reformat you will be grand.

Just put in your windows cd and boot from it. Windows setup will ask you if you want to repair or install a new copy. It may be worth trying the repair option but if not, just select install.

When it asks you for a partition for it to be set up on DONT select erase/reformat partition.

IT will detect your existing installation and ask if you want to overwrite it or install in a new directory.

If you select overwrite you will just lose whatever programs you have installed - but not data held inplaces like my documents/my music.
