My laptop has been infected by some sort of trojan virus or at least thats what keeps popping up, its one of those where its infected my favourites and if i try to access google it takes me to a an antivirus software page where it tries to tell you what is being done to your computer and tries to get you to buy the necessary software to fix your pc.
It is extremely annoying and as the laptop is fairly new I dont have an antivirus package installed,
my question is, is there a free antivirus download that would scan and clear this from my conmputer?
    would appreciate any advice.

AVG, Anti-Vir or avast!, they all have free versions and should be linked where challengemaster said. Download one of them and scan in Safe Mode, post back if you are still having difficulty.

    Im back due to failure!!

I downloaded a version of Anti--Vir and most recently AVG, both were easy to install and scanned my computer , both found lots of nasty little infections and quarantined/deleted them but they cannot fix the main problem which is the spyware problem I have.As I type I currently have a bubble open in the right hand corner of the screen, the virus has installed itself in the programme list in the bottom right hand panel (not sure what you call it)
alongside volume control and all those things, its showing up as an exclamation mark in a yellow box, the bubble has the same symbol and states:" Security Alert:Spyware found - Your comp is infected with last version of PSW.x-Vir trojan. PSW trojans steal your private info.,registration details, documentations etc. Click this baloon to remove PSW.x-vir spyware. "
If I click on this baloon it takes me to www.antivermins.conm which advertises the software required to rid me of the problem (conveniently!).

Windows also has a security alert warning red shield symbol in the bottom right panel, im aware I will prob need to get norton or something like that to protect my pc from now on but if anyne can offer any links for free anti-virus software downloads which could cure this apart from what was given above, i would be most appeciative.
    thanks in advance.

This thread should serve as a warning for all users with new computers not to go anywhere near the internet without antivirus software installed. It is estimated that it takes about 5 seconds for an unprotected computer to pick up a virus of some kind.

I'm sorry for OP that they are having so much trouble, hope it gets sorted out soon!

Once you have used smit rem to get rid of that browser hijack it would aslo be a good idea to run a scan of ewidio anti malware(now called avg antimalware)

Also make sure you turn off system restore and restart the pc then turn it bacak on again. this makes sure the trojan wont come back,to stop system restore go properties on my computer and go to the system restore tab, tick turn off system restore on all drives and press okay, then restart and reenable. Do this AFTER you have gotten rid of the nasty, not before
