Netgear DG834PN Issues

Apologies if this is the wrong forum as it's partial wireless and partial broadband.

I bought the Netgear DG834PN modem/router off ebay a couple of months back and have only about twice been able to establish sync and get online! Having read various posts here this seems to be a problem with the netgear combined modems/routers.

So given that I've about zero chance of returning this router, I'm trying to work around the problem for the moment. Currently I only realy need a wireless internet connection for my laptop. I have a UTV USB Zyxel modem connected to my pc which works fine and always makes a connection.

My thoughts are that when I need an internet connection for the laptop is that I could use the internet connection on the pc via some sort of wireless network to connect the laptop to. Is this possible and how would I go about it?

More long term I'm thinking that I'll need to get an ethernet modem and connect this to the netgear router to share the broadband connection. Will this solution work as presume I can just disable the modem on the router and use the external modem?

    Cheers for any help!

Ended up taking the simple route out of this and got a WAG354G Linksys 54Mbps WireLess router for €49 and had it set up in about 5 mins which is the way it should be.
