"Giving a Little Back"

Ive just been thinking recently about how good of a life us poker players have, and i was hoping to arrange some sort of way for us to collectively make an effort to help those less of, especially around xmas time, through the charity concern.

What i hope to do is the folowing, instead of making small and individual contributions like some of us do each year i was hoping that was could have a boards poker forum/ concern christmas appeal.

the way it could work is that every player who signs up to the offer would donate a minimum of 10euro and any figure after that is anonymous. An idea i had is that, considering alot of us seem to be winning players, we could play online or live for a mere hour, and donate our winnings from this. whats an hour to give, esp whilst playing a game we all enjoy?!?

Through this hopefully we could get a large figure that we could present to concern on behalf of all us here in boards poker. The way i was hoping we could all donate the money is that is others agree with this, i will approach the 3 dublin card rooms, who will hopefully allow people to leave envelopes addressed to "Boards Poker Forum/ Concern Christmas appeal", and at a given date (prob 20th dec or so) we should have a nice amount to give to Concern. For those of us outside dublin, if you dont think you'l be in the big smoke to get to one of these casino's then hopefullly i can arrange with Luke (the fitz) that amounts can be posted there (postal order and not cash advised) (cant see this being a problem, but not definite yet).

If we can get over 20 people who agree to "sign up" through this thread, then i will contact concern immediately, and also see if i can get Bank Of Ireland to give us a large check to present to concern (which would be photographed for all to see).

For those who dont no me, i am a regular reader of boards although not too regular of a poster, and thought it was about time to stnad up and try and make this work. Also if one or two others would like to help with this (ie one from each club in dublin, or areas of ireland) then we can ensure that it is professionally done and we can make this a complete success (plz pm me if you would be interested in helping, or have any ideas for).

Hopefully everyone will row in behind my idea and we can make a little effort by many change, the lives of others.

    Thanks all,

Please reply with interest and sugestions

    Donal.

    good stuff donal.

what we did in DIT last year was during the top up period of our rebuy we said that 5 euro got your usual 3k extra chips, but if you paid 10 (i.e. 5 to charity) you got 10k in chips... surprisingly everyone paid 10 'for value' and we got something like 190 for CARI childrens charity. perhaps, if card rooms around dublin agreed to give maybe a bonus 500 chips in some tourneys for a tenner or something...

the BOI on camden st, opposite the jackpot, do novelty cheques, they'll sort ya out no problem.

Yeh good idea Jeff, thanks for showing interest, hopefully we can get a few more and then i get get on to the card rooms concerned and the charity and give everyone the green light for it.

Good idea about the reg fee, ill be sure to mention it to the clubs, but either way i still think that collectively we could raise enough to make a proper difference this christmas.

If Dit poker soc, and other poker socs around ireland wanted to do as you suggested in aid of the boards poker forum/concern christmas appeal, then it would be greatly appreciated

I work in BOI on college green, do should be no problem getting the novelty check.

Thanks for the idea though, and hopefully more will commit to this . . .

Would you be interesting in imalgumating the proceeds of your game with the my own idea?

if not i definately think that it is possible for both ideas to realise their full potential either ways. (i presume u dont mind me using the name "boards poker forum"?!?)

I definately think that this is not too big of an ask for everyone, and it definetly can work. A Mere 10 euro , or the winnings one makes off only an hours poker play is not much to ask to give up, and i think that it is very possible that we as a group can make a hefty enough donation to make a difference . . .

the santa strike force game in the fitz last year was great. it as a fifty buy in then as I remember, but I reckon that these days you'd get as many runners for 100.

looking forward to it again this year, did someone dress up in drag or am i having false memory syndrome again?

Doco, nice idea, I'll support you for a tenner alright.

I have an idea that is as bad as it is ill thought out. How about twenty people bring along wrapped presents worth a fiver or tenner each and the last twenty people to get knocked out before the prize money can have them? Crappy or brilliant or somewhere in between?

Thanks des and everyone else who replied, as i said before it can be as little as giving up and hours online play and just donating the profits, also perhaps connie in kerry and a few others from other areas could od the same in their card rooms, and imalgumate the whole lot to get a large figure in the end.

Yeh ronan i know donating online is easier but it aint too hard to just write a letter so il keep the format as easy as that!

Was hoping that a few of our online pro's would feel like donating an hours work????

either way hope to hear back from more of yee soon.

    thanks Donal
