Well folks tis the season of goodwill and all our bosses are just dying to give us a big payrise!;) My question is - what percentage of your salary do people generally get as a pay rise? I know people at the start of their careers may get a larger increase percentage wise so perhaps if we say how long we have been working and then the percentage i.e for me last year

7 years experience construction industry (architecture/engineering) - 5% pay rise

Do people think this is good/bad?

Well depends on the industry as well.

My cousin is just after getting a 75% bonus working for an investment bank in London. Some of the payrises and bonuses in that industry at this time of year are astronomical. He's been working there 4 years as well, obviously he had a decent year this year. Expecting a nice xmas present from him anyways!

I work in IT in the financial services sector and the pay rises average around 10% per annum.

    Bonus would be similar.

I got 10% last year after my first year (plus a few extra months) in an IT job, but i was being paid very poorly for that first year, so I think they were feeling guilty ;)

Really depends on how successful the business has been that year. If they are small and made an overall loss your payrise may not happen. Just take that sorta stuff into consideration before trying to find a % you believe you deserve.
