I need to buy a camera today, Im going on holidays tomorrow and was going to pick one up in Argus or curry's or something, Im not a pro like some of you here, but I have always enjoyed taking good pictuirs, be it family, landscape, or sporting events, concerts etc. I was going to spend around €300 to €400, I would love a digital dlr camera, but I think it would be outside my price range, Just wondering if any of you guy's could offer any advice on what to buy, I will be in London tomorrow, so could buy one there if it was cheaper than here, thanks.

A lot of people have spent a lot of money on a digital SLR camera, and then proceed to use it on fully automatic mode. This really is a waste of money, and you're better off with a nice 6MP point and shoot, and when you can fully understand and use all the manual functions of that and feel restriced by them, only then can you justify moving up to D-SLR. Spend €300 on a nice 6 or 7 MP point-and-shoot, and concentrate on using it properly, and you'll get lovely results. If you find that you're interest increses dramatically, then you can upgrade in a year or so. At worst, if you do upgrade because of greatly increased interest, then the point-and-shoot will not be wasted, as you will bring it places that the SLR isn't practical to briing.

If you need one today and it's just for the holidays why don't you pick up something cheap when you get there? Then when you get back you can concentrate on a dslr. It will improve your snaps no end and since you have a few photographic interests you can add lenses as needed.
Best of luck and enjoy the hols.

Isn't the D40 (Nikon) going to cost around E500? Maybe if you stretch your budget a bit...

Thanks for the advice guy's, went to town today didnt get anything, I think I might get this when Im in London tomorrow, Fuji S9500 digital camera £268.45 works out about €412. Will need to get an xd card too, 512mb is £24.99 over there, I think Biro is right, Im better off starting with something like this and then maybe in a year or two if I am still interested in photography I can upgrade to an SLR and all that lens stuff. Anyway thanks again for your help, no doubt I will have many questions to come in the future and its nice to know there are friendly people out there like you's to answer them, Thanks.

What you've got there is a prosumer camera, sort of middle ground between a point and shoot and a dSLR. You have control over the exposure and aperture etc like a SLR but with a non changeable lens.
Maybe a bit bulky for a holiday cam but should give you nice shots. Get a back pack for it so you don't look too much like a tourist making you an easy mugging target.

    Don't forget extra batteries!

I've just bought the little brother of that camera..the S5600...I'm sure it's fairly basic compared to what most people on here use..but to me it's been a revelation coming from an Olympus D-540. It has really wetted my appetite for photography (something I've always been interested in but thought I could never afford) and I'm already looking at things like the Nikon D40. But like the poster said up above..I want to learn how to use this camera first..become familiar with the manual settings..to the point where I feel limited by it ..then I'll hopefully have the money to buy something like a Nikon DSLR and a decent lens/s.

BTW..This forum is brilliant for picking up tips and composition advice. Have also found Amateur Photography magazine very helpful and interesting too.

Don't put the S5600 down, it should get you some great photos. The best thing is just to play with the different settings some evening when you've time and see what changing x does to y. The beauty of digital is that you can mess up as much as you want without having to spend money developing prints.
Have a good holiday and enjoy the new toy!
