Just been reading one of the stickies - mentioned Tony Quinn. I too have been given the Casein spiel, and have to say, it sounds good when your man goes on about it. He claims Whey is only effective directly after exercise. Obviously I didn't buy it, because 'how come, then, nobody else sells it?'
But is it really that bad? and what's the real story behind it. Would combining the two be effective? Your answers, please?

First off, ignore anything and everything said to you in a TQ shop. Seriously.

Casein and whey are two different types of protein, nothing more than that. Csein is the 'curds' and whey is the .. well, 'whey' in cheese manufacture. Milk is made up of around 80-90% casein protein, the rest is whey.

The fundamental difference betweent eh two is that casein is slow-release and therefore perfect for taking right before bed- it can take up to 7 hrs to digest but normally only takes 3-4. Whey is absorbed really fast, in about 30-40 minutes and is better to have straight after a workout when you want the protein to hit your bloodstream fast to start rebuilding muscle fibres.

Personally I don't take casein powder, I eat cottage cheese before bed- still has casein in it, lots cheaper. So, whey post-workout, casein before bed.

Also when you take whey in the morning or straight after a workout if taken with water it gets absorbed fast. Before bed time taken with milk give you casein also so this acts as a slow release agent for your whey. Everything else is pretty much what gem said to you.
