works for me also. liking the look of the monitor but i doubt ill be going queuing at crazy hours of the morning to get one.

(i reckon at this stage there should nearly be a dedicated aldi and lidl thread on bargain alerts)

    so two questions

    is the pc worth it?

    is the screen worth it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

    Two answers:

    Bought together....

    No

    and

    No

    Check out this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055014064

But I think the LCD screen on it's own is good value and would make a nice upgrade or gift for someone with an older or smaller screen.

I reckon that PC is worth the price. Apparently, and this is only what I saw on the sign instore, but I think it comes with a free upgrade to Vista also.
Would want to, considering its currently Media Centre. But that isnt a bad PC, considering it comes with a lot of extras.

It's a personal opinion as to whether the Aldi system represents good value or not. The Dell system is €658 including a 19" monitor, media card reader, 1yr service and the free Vista Premium upgrade. The Aldi system is €1050 with the 19" monitor. You're paying almost €400 more for those extras. The details of the Aldi Medion PC say it's Vista Premium Ready. As far as I know, that doesn't mean a free Vista Premium upgrade: http://www.aldi.ie/images/data_product/303303953455c6bb74d721.pdf

I thought I read about a free upgrade to Vista on the in-store poster too. The PDF only says it'd be ready to potentially upgrade to Vista.

I'd imagine it'll have a free upgrade for that price though.

Lexmark they'd be at least 5,000 Euro each :o

Probably be the guts of 40 Euro each.
Lexmark are the most expensive cartridges but you can get cheaper ones.

Never ever ever buy a Lexmark printer.
They are garbage and outrageously expensive to run.
    Get a HP,Canon or Epson.

Here here! I've an old (P1000) HP, and using recycled cartridges is cheap and print quality is perfect (I know its subjective).

I know of someone who had a Lexmark printer, tried to buy a cartridge in Argos, and wound up buying the printer again - as it was cheaper than buying the cartridges themselves! Rip off! Plus a lot of their models (that I've used) have $hite print quality!

Epsons are just as bad. Cheaper to buy a printer than the inks!

    Canon ftw!

I've had an Epson R200 for a couple of years and never paid more than 99p for an ink cart, shop around my man, ebay, 7dayshop

Dell have a Core 2 Duo with a good graphics card and a 19" monitor for 658? Link? As in, not doubting you, but I really want to see this!

I agree with Havoc regarding that earlier thread and reference to current Dell E520 machine.
It's another PC, IT IS NOT a direct comparison.

This is as near as possible to the Aldi PC.
Note the crappy keyboard and mouse, no wireless onboard, no TV tuners. DVD writer is not lightscribe(not bothered)

Dell price was €965, had to phone to exclude the monitor

Not to mention the 7650GS is pretty much 2x the card the 7300LE is. :D

Lads would any of ye recommend buying that 320gb external sata hard drive?
    http://www.aldi.ie/special_buys2/product_496.html

I seriously need a new hard drive, im struggling on 40 gbs at the moment.
The cons are that its only 8mb cache, and i think it says its just S-ATA, theres no mention of S-ATA 2 in the description??
Do any of ye know what type of Manufacture aldis hard drives normally are?

Its either that, or this western digital hard drive for 105 euro:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=318471

    What do you think?
    Would really appreciate ye're help.
Im delighted to have found a forum like this, ill never miss a bargain again!

No experts on hard drives, here no? :(

i am no expert in hard drives but if its usb2 interface to the pc the sata technology will not matter as much ... especially as seek time for the drive will be slow if you measure it through usb 2 connection ...the big advantage of aldi for me is if the drive fails you can bring to to a store and exchange / refund for 3 years usually ... i had a seagate drive fail and had to ship it to uk at my own expense ... then again drives dont fail that much but it just might if its a cheap model

Hi Corkproducers, you're probably not getting the help/advice you need because you're not posting in the right place. Probably the Computer Tech or Hardware forum would give you a better response.

My advice is that I think you're not comparing like with like. A USB external drive is designed for additional storage space on a PC, when you have suffcient space on the main hard drive. It's not meant to provide extra essential space when you've run out of space on your hard drive. I know that sounds like a contradiction; but there is a difference. If you need extra essential drive space or you're running out of space it's always better to upgrade your internal HDD, not to buy an external drive.

Got the Medion PC in Aldi. Quite impressive too, for the €850 price. Video connections are astonishing:

Output: VGA, DVI, HDMI, composite, s-video, component and scart. Audio, is stereo mini-jack, coax digi and optical digital.

There are plenty of inputs. At the front there are 3 slots for memory cards. Also at the front, RCA audio inputs, composite video and s-video, 6 pin and 4 pin firewire, 2 USBs, mic and headphone inputs.

At the back, there are optical and coax digital audio inputs, mini-jacks for 7.1 surround sound. 4 more USBs and another firewire.

There is both an analogue and digital tuner onboard which works well with the built in media centre. Remote control is nice and nifty.

Lots more connections that I cant remember the details on - Serial Port, parallel port, etc.

Also has wireless built in and comes with wireless keyboard and mouse.

Downloaded some 1080i HD footage and the PC had no probs playing it perfectly on the 32" widescreen monitor.

Will see how it copes when I install my video editing software and start uploading and editing high def video footage.

Great buy and my friend bought one this morning at the Finglas branch - Dont bother going there as he got the last one!!!

also got one and the only downer is that it has only the two memory slots so if you want to upgrade to 2 gig, you're gonna have a spot of bother, which I'm in at the minute and selling my 2X512 RAM over on adverts.ie
