I was thinking of getting the 17-85 IS lens by canon ,
It doesn't have to be the all seeing eye or anything ,once it does it's job without any complaints ,I'd be happy to hear your opinion.

    Thanks in advance.

The one problem is that it cannot be used on a full frame camera either digital or film.

Thanks joolsveer ,I understand the efs means it won't work on standard slr's.
It's just there doesn't seem to be any other canon lens ,that is wide and has a good zoom aswell for the 350/30D

The 17-55 2.8 is good and wide and is supposed to be a great performer, it is bloody expensive though. Doesn't have the same reach as the 17-85, but everything in photography is a trade off I guess.
Actually on that expensive note above if you look at the price of the 17-85 here and compare the 17-55 from HK or the States you won't be that much out of pocket at all!

I really wanted to buy a canon lens if i can ,but on fred miranda the 17-85 lens gets bad comments.
I really can't justify the 17-55 2.8 lens at all . I'm not that good with a camera.

mine should be arriving tomorrow so if you can hang on I'll give you an opinion/shots based on both the canon and sigma.

Brian, I have the 17-85mm IS EFS.

I personally really like it, great walk about lens.

All the photos on my Flickr (check my sig) at the minute were taken with it.

    heh :)
in any case it would be cheaper that 17-40 + 24-105 :)

    however there are options...:
28-135 is - as an everyday zoom - e399 on ac-foto - It's nice lens, and not cropped.

Depends what you really want: do you really need that 17 if you have kit already?

I hate it, twas my first lens. AND still my favourite.. it is the perfect walk around lens, the IS is great and the range is ideal for everyday stuff. As you as you have a good low light lens handy you are fairly well covered with the 17-85. It stays on my camera all the time.

The newly released 2.8 looks great but I couldnt justify that money to change mine now. When I bought there was only the f/4 version and it does the job for me. But if you have the cash to splash about why not go for the 2.8

Pretty much all of my flickr shots are with that lens if you wanna check out its results. Nothing too exciting there mind you.. but at least you will get the idea
