couple membership query

Can anyone tell me if this seems like discrimination?

Myself and my sister went down to our local gym which has just opened this week
They have various types of memberships
    Single- €695 Couple: €1150 Corporate: €595

The girl asked us if we lived in the same household, we said yes
She said we could get the couple membership, So we filled out the app form.
When we finished we handed the form back to another girl, she said we may not be able to get the couple membership coz we weren't a legitimate couple, we were just sisters.
The manager called us this morning to confirm this.

So it seems you can get couple membership if you're:

    A married couple
    An unmarried couple
    A gay couple
or if you are 2 friends sharing a household (i guess coz you could say you were a couple)

But not 2 siblings sharing a household

Are they legally allowed to stipulate that you must be a couple

    Any Thoughts?

I wouldn't call two people living in the same house "a couple" unless they were actually "a couple"

So if I'm living with my mate we're "a couple"? Me and my dad should be able to get "couples membership"???? Er....no....

You ain't a couple, you are sisters who happen to live in the same house. I don't see how anyone could see that as discriminatory.

I would love to hear any conversations you may have with the dept of equality and law reform though.

neither would i call 2 people living in the same house a couple
but they were perpared to give us the couple membership rate even though we aren't a couple until they noticed we were sisters from our application form

The girl specifically said "do you live in the same household?" "then you can get couple membership"

suppose discrimination is the wrong term to use

we should have just said we were married
that would explain having the same surname!

We're just gonna have to pay the full whack! they won't budge on it.
