Cordless phone won't work in my house!

My parents got a new set of portable/cordless phones in the house, so I took their old one for my place. It was working perfectly in theirs but I plugged it in at my house and it will not work. It just doesn't seem to pick up a dial tone at all, nor does it ring when l call the house from my mobile.

Can anyone think of a reason for this? I have tried it from all the different extensions and with different cables etc. My flatmate said that he too brought one from hone a few months previous and it didn't work either. Do you have to have a certain type of phone line or something, it doesn't make any sense to me.
    Advice appreciated.

The most likely cause is something else using the same frequency. Most of these phones work on the 2.4Ghz band, as does Wifi, baby monitors and tv digisenders.

Do you (or any of your neighbours) use any of these types of devices?

I have a linksys WRK54G wireless router in the same room, its on channel 11 - 2.467Ghz - would this affect it?

Try plugging out the router and see if it works? :)

Possibly - I know I had to change my wireless router to channel 1 as it was playing havok with my tv digisender.

Have you re-paired the handset with the base unit since setting it up in your place?
Most cordless phones need to be re-paired when the base unit is unplugged from the mains. Sometimes it just means placing the handset onto the base unit but others need a button or 2 pressed aswell. Try get your hands on the manual or post the model here.

The phone is a Tevion D13 DAM - bought it in Aldi or Lidl a while back.

Tried pluggin it out but still no dial tone. Also presed the button so "Tevion" apeared on the screen

With many UK phones you usually need to use a BT/Eircom adapter that also has a capacitor in it. These phones will not ring or have dial tone without this capacitor (something to do with the difference between UK and Irish phone networks). However, I presume that phone you have originated in other Euro country and uses a standard RJ11 to RJ11 phone lead.

As kaisersoze said, are you sure the handset is paired with the base? The little antenna icon usually flashes on handsets that are not communicating with the base.
