This is a really strange situation - when I try to open my C drive in windows it asks what programme do you want to open this file with... just like if it were an unassociated file...

I can still get into my folders by typing C:\ directly into the address bar... this is really strange (and frightening to a computer programming noob like myself).

    :(

    Please help!

    That doesn't sound good..

.. presuming it's XP, maybe try and XP Repair Installation.

Actually, could possibly be a virus / very nasty spyware.. did you do a scan with all the regulars? Ad-aware, Spybot, HiJackThis etc.?

Did you unassciate explorer with something else?

Next time it asks what to open it with browse to windows and click explorer.

You have a corrupt association. It should open with explorer.exe. Recreate the association.

Edit: Oops kdjac got there before me.

Got spybot, defender, avg, anti-virus guard running... also registry cleaner and cc?cleaner...

I don't mess around with associations... it doesn't have the explorer option in "open with" - just internet explorer.

I've been having problems with explorer and buffer overflows in general for a while (around 2 months) now.

    :(

where is explorer.exe located by the way? (since it's not listed in the open with section).

often I would be working and then when I try to open a folder (or when I'm in the midst of opening a folder) the screen goes blank (background remains). The programmes that were active still work (except for explorer folders) and I can't see the startmenu/taskbar programmes on my desktop anymore. I load up task manager (via ctrl alt delete) and after a while task manager appears (along with the taskbar and programmes on my desktop.

I'm in a foreign country right now (China) so I don't have access to my windows disk... support here would be patchy at best... (it would probably be easier to buy pirated software than to get it fixed in a store here) - I don't want to do that! :(

Sorry, I didn't read KdjaCL's post properly, I've found explorer.exe - but I'm not given the option of "always open with this program"... it seems I can't associate the drive anymore?
