possible win32 virus?

I keep my hard drive very clean but yesterday I downloaded a couple of applications, PPmate and Sopcast, to watch live football on the net. To get them running I had to allow a few things on my F-Secure firewall. Since then my laptop has been acting a bit strange...

PPmate started crashing, win 32 error messages appeared on the first startup after installing them and my toolbar turned from blue to grey (but has since reverted back). Occasionaly my keyboard acts up eg. when I hit apostrophe a quickfind toolbar pops up instead, the arrow keys not working, not being able to copy and paste etc.

I did a full scan using F-Secure Internet Security 2006 and no malware or anything was found but it skipped the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY

Everything seems to be back to normal at the moment though.

Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?

Edit: sorry I probably should have posted this in the security forum

did you uninstal the application, do a search with google?

the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY is physical hive for registry, cannot open it, even as administrator except using raw disk access.

I think I just freaked out a bit last night, am not used to dealing with viruses! Everything is all hunky dory again and I'm using one of the apps to watch the Arsenal Bolton game live (high quality stream with Sky commentary!). It may have been a Firefox error or something but I don't think I'll worry about it unless the errors start to re-occur.
