Cannot open any files.

using wndows xp, screen went blue witha system error, when i restarted the machine no programs will opena dn there are no icons associted with my shortcuts or files, started in safe mode no difference, loaded to previous config that worked, made no difference, msconfig, system restore etc wont open. please help!!

If you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL is explorer.exe in the list? Have a look here and see how you get on.

tried this, explorer.exe was grand, any other ideas?
ive looked about and cant find anything else on the net to help

Are you getting error messages when you try to open these programs?

nothing happens when i try to open the programs from the desktop it just sits there. and when i right click there is no option to open. some programs give the error for which program you would like to use to open the program

your registry has been corrupted or damaged to a degree. 90% sure your problem is with the classes registry key. this basically tells windows how to deal with any file, how to open it and what program to use etc.

registry key is located under

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes]

do your have a second computer on a network at home? if you do you can use regedit on your working computer to remotley open the registry on the busted one and re-import the classes registry keys.

just export the classes key above to a file on the working computer and then import it into the broken one remotely.

great idea, unfortunately regedit doesnt open either, any other ideas?

thats why im asking if you have a second machine you need to use regedit from a working machine to connect to the fecked one

also if your technically brave enuf , you can also take the disk from the broken machine put it into the good one and open the registry file off the disk and import it again, you will need to know how to edit the exported registry file aswell so it imports to the right location and not back to the same place on the good machine
