    Hey all,
I am currently filling out an online application form for a primary teaching course. I have answered most questions Ok but theres two I am not sure about. I dont want to write the wrong things.. I was wondering if any of you could give me a few pointers on them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bare in mind my primary degree and MSc are in computing..

    1. Describe briefly your reasons for wanting to teach giving the relevance of your previous education and experience, including teaching, visits to schools and other work with young people.

    2. Give details of relevant work experience with dates, including any periods spent abroad and present occupation, if any.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Just be honest! Why do you want to be a teacher? What have you done that makes you think you'll be good at it? ie.. youthclubs, juvenile hurling coaching.. whatever it is.

For Q2.. You're the only one who can answer that.. nobody here could give you tips on your relevant work experience with dates, including any periods spent abroad and present occupation, if any.

Well I am really coming from the angle that I have little to no experience dealing with young people, clubs, etc and you dont get to do much of that in computing. Should I make up stuff like I coached U12 football, etc... I wonder would they check it out.. The course is in the UK.

I was in the same boat.. BSc. in computing. I really wouldnt go making stuff up, but thats just me. I'd be paranoid about it forever!

I'd try to do some volunteering, even for a day here and there in some capacity that gives you a little experience. It'll be good for your CV and it'll tell you whether you actually want to be a teacher.

Its a whole different ballgame that actually being in school as a pupil.

Did you become a teacher? What is it like?

I love it.. I wouldnt do anything else. Having said that I know plenty of teachers that dont like the job and are counting the days to retirement.

You really should spend some time getting some sort of experience with teaching/ training/ helping children in some way before signing up to teach. For your own sake.

What do you like about it so much? Like what are the highlights?

The highlights of the job for me are going to be different to yours. For me its the achievement of seeing a child do something that you know you taught them.

Also, I find their sense of humour hilarious.

Please dont make the decision to go into teaching based on someone elses experiences though. Its not fair on you or the children you'll teach. You need to confirm to yourself that you'll love the job because its not something you do for the holidays or the money. You need to love it to get on well in the job.
