I bought a 1973 ford mustang my dream car it’s been shipped from the states this very moment.
cant get any f**king classic insurance,
I am 20 years old with full license.
so whats the deal how come not one company will insure my mustang.
Till this date I have been a good law abiding citizen but now apparently ill have to drive my mustang illegally without insurance.
Most insurance companies say I have to be 25 and one company said I had to be 30 years old this is f**king madness.

Did you have a look for insurance before you decided to get the car??

I wanted a Delorean when I was twenty, and insurance was the thing, as with all cars when you're in your early twenties insurance is the issue. I nearly bought a nissan nx100 a few years ago, rang for a quote and couldn't get one.........Insurance quotes first, car next

Did you really not look at insurance first???
so whats the deal how come not one company will insure my mustang.

Driving a 1.5 ton car left hand drive 33 year old car with a 5 liter engine, no crumple zones, air bags, traction control, abs, structural reinforcement, cabin padding and in my case, only manual drum brakes is generally not a very good risk for an insurance company, thats why it has to be my second car and limited milage.
but now apparently ill have to drive my mustang illegally without insurance.

Best of luck to you with that, thats the nice thing about having a classic car, no police ever stop you just to have a friendly chat about your nice car. I'm sure you'll be fine, sure what of it if your car is stolen, or you crash it, into somone else.

Strip the car down, by the time you have it the way you want, you'll be fine with the insurace company :)

Tough luck dr_gonza_attorney. I wouldn't go down the road of uninsured driving, for a start the cops could take it off you if your caught and if you lose your licence you'll never get to drive it. Maybe look at one of your parents insuring it and going on the policy as a second driver. Any specs on the motor, I have a 72 myself, basically the same model.

Have these sort of policies not already been through the courts. I thought it was illegal on discrimination grounds to refuse a service/product because of your age. Statistical reasons are a different matter, but the fact that one company says you must be 30 would suggest that they are just using your age. I doubt there are enough classic drivers under 25 to form any meaningful statistics anyway.

Can you just not get classic insurance, or no insurance at all? You won't get a classic policy until you're 25 at least, and have a second car.

Shouldn't in theory stop you from getting a standard policy, though with that size engine it will be pricey. As Dubtom suggests - if you can get a family member to insure it as a main car, you may be able to drive it as a named driver. (Even named drivers on classic policies need to be 25 or over AFAIK).

    Good luck. :)

    it goes like this
Me: Want insurance for a 38 year old 5 litre car
Insurance company: I'm sorry you have to be over 25
Me: But you have to quote me this is discrimination...blah blahh
IC: Well we don't have a discount package for you
Me: blah blah blah, you have to quote me blah blah Law, Blah angry blah blah
IC: ok, hold on..... that will be 17,423 euro and 11 cent for the year

(actually happened to someone I know, but they were a poor risk as they were very old and sick)

The question I have to ask is how does a 20yr. old afford a classic Mustang and afford to import it from America?

I'm 20 aswell, and yet I can barely afford to keep my Micra on the road.

    1) his parents give him money
    2) he is more intelligent than you and earns more
    3) he's lying

    take your pick!

I'm not saying that a 20 yr old should be able to get insured on a 30 year old 5l car, but I don't think it should be up to the insurance companies to decide who they will and will not provide their service too based on a persons age. If they pull together their statistical evidence and discover that a quote of 17k is warranted, fair enough, if they discover that a 20 year old driving a classic is no riskier than a 40 year old drving a classic, (remember, this isn't just 5l mustangs, it's all classic cars) well then the quote should reflect that.

Let's stop judging the OP and hope he gets it sorted!

Bit of a schoolboy error though it has to be said.

dr_gonza_attorney, did you really not get a quote first? Did you insure it during transit? What car do you usually drive and how much insurance do you pay?

    thanks for replies
ok ill try to explain my situation better
first of all i bought the car with my own money I am an electrician:)
i did a good few months research checking out with different american dealers
i finally came across a 1973 ford mustang grande Big block 351 C 300bhp fully restored for 7000euro and shipping cost 1300euro
for daily driving i have a 99 hyundi accent gs with full license
my plan was to get classic insurance and just take it out the odd Sunday/special events etc so getting normal insurance on it as a second car i would not be able to afford
i didn’t know about the 25 age limit for classic insurance but if i did i wouldn’t have bought it. ill be dammed if ill have to wait till I am 25 before i can drive american muscle cars.
I am checking out parents insurance deal hopefully ill be able to work that out but its kinda lame having to drag my parents into it.

Do the shipping costs include VAT and customs duties? Because the car is being imported from outside the EU union, you will be liable for those costs. They're 21% of the Purchase price AND Transport costs! Something a lot of people overlook when they look at importing directly from the States or other non-EU countries...

Have you tried insuring Mustang as first car daily driver 10,000 mile policy with First Ireland. May be slightly less restrictions than a classic 2nd car policy.
(then try adding hyundai to same policy as 2nd car, or have parent insure hyundai with you as named driver)

Failing that get a parent to try First Ireland 10,000 mile policy with you on as named driver.

If nothing else works maybe try temporarily transferring the hyundai insurance to the Mustang for the odd weekend (would at least get you to a few classic car shows, maybe with a for sale sign :( )

Gardai may turn a blind eye to many things on a classic, but no insurance is asking for trouble.

Sweet, mine has a 351C also, their more a medium than big block. It must have had a lot of work done on the engine as that year they came with 156 hp max. A vgood price though, especially for a fast back.Hope everything works out ok for you.

I still think that's your best option. Lame it may be, but once it's sorted and you're street legal and driving that baby nobody will care. (As long as you don't rear-end a Bentley ;)).

Got any pics for us? Also who you used for shippers, and if the cost includes port fees etc. As PaulK notes - I hope you factored in the VAT!
