Thinking of an upgrade - advice?

Hey all!!

Hope you are enjoying the cold frosty misty weather yada yada yada...

ADVICE:

Thinking of selling on the old 350D to an interested buyer, which leaves me with an upgrade query... if I do sell, what next?

400?
20?
30? (eek)

Advice, opinions, help etc

Just to add... that being a weak little girl with a semi-metal arm... I really dont want to go 'too' heavy. Found the 20D I bit tough, maybe I would get used to it, but is the 30 any lighter?

Comments like 'get a Nikon' will receive evil looks!! Im not about to sacrifice my lens collection just cos Nikons are nice!!

Wait till end of February...

there are rumors (heh I'm actually spreading them) that Canon will release 40D in February. I'm gessing it's either be:
40D = 30D + 1.3 crop factor (really hard to believe as they keep 1.3 for mark's and stuff)
or
40D = 30D + dustbin (oops dust removal).

IF 1.3 crop, I'd sell my 30D for it definitely.

Anyways, stop dreaming, back to the real life: I hardly see any reason upgrading for 400D as it's pretty much the same. dustbin isn't really worth it, and + 2 megapixels on the same sensor size will only mean you'll run out of CF cards space faster. I'd also recommend against 20D, as it's a bit old :)

So my advice - wait till end of February, even in the worst case Canon decides to upgrade it's Mark or 5D line it will still affect the prices on lower class bodies, and you'll save some more moneys to spend on that nice 30D :)

thing is even 5D can be bough for 2000... hmm...

Nikons are not for gurls anywaze :p

Body & battery only, the 350d weighs in at 540g

400d at 556g
20d at 764g
and 30d at 785g

So better get those bionics installed quicksmart!

its obvious,

1ds Mark II
100mm f2.8 macro prime,
28-70 f2.8
70-200mm f4.0 IS
10-22mm f3.5-4.6
50mm f1.4 prime
15mm f2.8 fisheye

oh wait, thats my dream list? Did you say price was not relevant?

*yawn* There are always and will always be rumours spread mostly by malcontents.

Yeah, cos nobody ever got decent photos with a camera thats a couple of years old... In fact I know for certain that nobody has ever gotten a decent photo with a camera thats over 10 years old!

I constantly live in fear that my 2 year old 20D might fall apart in my hands one of these days, such is it's age...
So my advice - wait till end of February

My advice would be not to wait for new models, because you will be waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Get at least a 20D now, only consider getting a 30D if you want a slightly bigger screen and spot metering. If I was in that situation, I'd be looking for a low milage 20D that doesnt look like it's been used as a hammer.

Why the change, what's up with your 350?

Last night when an advert for the 400D came on the telly, darling husband panicked - but I quickly reassured him that I had no reason to upgrade... (didn't mention getting a couple of new lenses though)

I wouldn't want the bulk and weight of a 20/30D either so I'm not sure the upgrade would be worth it for the sake of just build quality. Do the 20/30D perform better at high ISO's?

Well just that someone offered to buy my 350D if I was upgrading and it put the idea in my head. My mate recently sold his 350 to upgrade to a 400 for a couple of euro, literally... very happy with the move.

See I dont really want anything too heavy, thats why I was thinking of going for the 400, plus the sensor cleaning jobbie sounds like fun. The screen on the 400 is super as well. Not much of a reason to upgrade Ill admit but while the 350's are still making good money maybe now is the time to make the change if im going to .. ya know!

That makes sense. No reason to upgrade really except if you can get the 400 for a few squid. The 350 is a fine camera.

I'd say don't upgrade unless its to a 5d - going to anything else doesn't warrant the jump imo.

I have a 350D and also got a 20D to replace it. Cant believe the difference in the 2. 20D + 70-200 f2.8 = sore arm. Still though very happy with the change. It cost me less than the 350D new :)

Like I said... :) I finally see the Nikon attraction.. played with a d80 recently and it was yummy!!

But I wont give up my canon lenses that average 3 times the price of my camera!

So I officially appreciate the greatness of Nikon but am 'tied' to Canon who I also love...

... its very comfy here on my fence :P

I'd agree with Rymus here. I cant see too many advantages of the 400D over the 350D (Bar bigger screen and anti-dust)

A second hand 20D seems best, unless you can get the 400d for next to nothing.

*Comedy Sony Alpha option*

even at that, I'd prefer to have the 20D

feeble bionic arm???? 20D??? eurgh sometimes id like a regular elbow again

I heard that they are thinking of reopening the bionic women program and are looking for the next Jaime Sommers you should apply. Think of the advantages hear footsteps from a mile away, run more than 60 mph, bend steel with her bare hands, jump to the roof of a 12 story building, catch villians who are endangering our National security, and still have enough energy and motivation left over to use your talent and knowledge as a schoolteacher. Some of that would have to be useful when your taking snaps :D

Anyways back on topic: 350 == 400.

I don't really see the point in upgrading within the same series with Canon (i.e. from 350d-400d or 20d-30d) ... they have not really made that much of a leap forward ... at least this time around ... Ok a few more pixels, better metering and a bigger review screen ... but do you really need pictures as big as a house ?

So if you are upgrading then I think a better approach would be between series ... i.e. 350d - 30d or second hand 20d .... or 20d - 5d

but then again ... there is budget to consider ... if tight then I wait for then next in xx0d (500d?) ... and keep the 350d.

The one thing I like about the 20d is you can drop it on the ground a few times and it still works ... :o ... is it really too big and heavy for small hands? ... why not borrow one from someone for a few days to see how it feels? ... I'm sure Rymus would oblige ... sounds like he has a few of 'em ...

The 20D without the grip is as portable as any other camera, The odd time I take the grip off to clean it I'm amazed at how dinky the camera is on it's own.
I handled a 30D as well and it's similarly proportioned, if a teensy bit heavier.

But like other people have said I'd only upgrade if the current camera is holding you back.

i do have a longing for spot metering... :D

Not enough of a reason to upgrade from 350D to 400D.

Calculate how much you 'save' by not upgrading, then work out what lens you can now 'afford' with this 'money' you have. Voila, guilt free shopping :)
