Can anyone point me in the direction of a good digital SLR, around the €800 mark. It's for a present.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Nikon D50 with 18-55mm lens with money left over for some SD cards. Argos sell it for approx €580.

Yeah bear in mind that batteries, memory cards etc will set you back, not to mention lenses. Any entry level body from a Nikon D50, D70(s) or the new D80 to a Canon 300D, 350D and the new 400D should meet that budget. The newer models (D80 and 400D) will cost more of course so look out for a cheaper older model.
A 300D is a nice place to start looking but with that camera you'll need a hacked firmware to make a lot of the necessary "professional" settings available as Canon crippled this body. The D50 as suggested is also an excellent choice.
At the end of the day the bodies are much the same, the lenses make the difference.

I wouldnt see the point in buying a used camera as a present for someone; bit of an insult I'd say...

The 350D/400D and D50/D80 come within the budget, leaving money left over for a suitably sized memory card. I'd stick with the kit lens for the purposes of giving a present. That way the person can decide what lenses they want themselves down the road when their knowledge and experience increases.

350D/400D kit with ef 50 1.8 and some cf card and some baggy should do the trick...

    Nikkon is inferiour technology.
