I'm getting my new house wired at the moment for Sky and have the following questions:

Is it true that I need two CT100 cables for Sky+ and will I need the same set up if I get Sky HD instead.

Can the Sky HD box record programmes similar to Sky+

Thanks in advance for any advice

hi..i`m an electrician, aswell,as a sky installer, and yes you need 2 sat.cables out to your quad lnb....sky+ and sky hd,have the same functions with each other,ie being able to record, etc.., what you should do is put another 2 sat cables in to another room, for additional sky box, when you are doing it,for the future...and use up the quad lnb.. sparkie

    Thanks Sparkie,

I'll be getting two basic Sky boxes in other rooms so the quad LNB will be fully utilised.

put in an extra CT100 for return line to your distribution system so you can watch on other tv's. You could also run HDMI cables to get HD on other tv's via a HDMI router

why not put all sat equipment in the attic, and use magic eyes, to any location?
you still have full control over the system, and still very good pictures, if done correctly.

    Re: Attic via RF.
Nothing like as good as Composite, no stereo and much poorer than RGB.

yes SkyHD is same as Sky+, except as well as Recording rental, it adds HD for the pocketfull of channels that do it and you pay HD rental too on top of your basic sub.

terrible idea, .loss of RGB, stereo sound and temp variations in attic are not good for electronics.

CT100 is the recommended cable although if you have already installed RG6 you may get away with it on a short run if there is nothing to cause external interference

Hmmm. If you were building a new house (which, fingers crossed I may be within 12 months), what's would be the best set-up, given that you would be starting with a blank page?
Is there a double-quad lnb out there?

So this will get me sky+ in two rooms (do they allow that?) plus four other feeds. That should do it.

Yeah, Sky allow for Octo LNB's now.

For the other rooms you're planning putting in a sat receiver, you'll need 2 downleads for each room (at least 1 of the downleads being CT100 equivalent), 1 for terrestrial signals, and the other for a sat receiver.

Cheers byte. I've looked at some of the specialists who do this sort of thing, including audio and other bits and pieces, but charge waaay too much.

I'm thinking a good electrician with a bit of savvy could wire your new home for sound and video for much less.

Aye a good sparky should be able to do it also. You will need to dictate the cables you want, perhaps supply him with some of the cables if he doesn't use them.

Make sure the electrician knows what he is doing and uses the correct cable, I get at least one call a week where a house is almost finished but tv wiring is a total shambles. You may pay more for a specialist but you must also consider whether its cheaper in the long run.
