10,000 miles per annum or yearly if you don't reach that

What year is the Golf? It may have long life service intervals, in which case the dash display will tell you when a service is due.

every 5k miles is a good idea, not a full service, just oil change oil filter air filter and sparks will pick it ticking over nicely.

No long life service on a 1996 Golf - Every 10000 miles if you use a semi synthetic oil or every 5000 if you used standard mineral oil.
