This might be depressing for most! But what’s the total cost (not including repair/up keep/trade-ins etc) of all the cars you’ve bought over the years?

    I’ll kick off:

    1979 Fiat 127 50 punts (1992)
    1981 Fiat 127 with plastic bumpers! 1200 punts (1993)
    1987 Fiat Uno 3500 punts 1993)
    1993 Citroen AX 1.4d 8000 punts (1994)
    1994 Peugeot 306 1.9d 10500punts (1995)
    1992 BMW 316i (e36) 9500punts (1998)
    1995 Audi A4 1.8i (b5) 14500punts (1999)
    2000 BMW 320d (e46) 33000punts (2000)
    1993 Mazda MX5 1.8i 8000euros (2002)
    1999 Audi S4 2.7 Twin turbo 18500euros (2005)
    1976 Triumph Spitfire 5500 euros (2006)
    2002 BMW 320d Touring 24000euros (2006)

    Subtotal punts 80250 (101969euros)
    Total euros 157969 euros

J.C. that’s depressing, but that doesn’t include trade-in price off

I have only ever owned one car. Managed to drive my parents cars for free until they ended up selling me one to keep me happy :D

    2000 Nissan Primera E3000 (Feb '06)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Joeface

€157969 oh sweet lord thats a big fund.

    1988 Starlet for €1,000 in 1998
    1991 Colt(jap imp) for €1,100 in 2001
    1994 Integra For €2,500 in 2003

wow a whole €4,600 my insurance on the other hand for my driving since 2001 has cost me a massive €11,590....still paying that stupid loan.

I think i shall treat my self to a new car in feb 07. maybe a 406 Coupe Diesel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,484 ✭✭✭Gerry

Hmm, this is fairly misleading since its only the purchase price of the car :)

    Drove my dads 1990 405 from 99 to 03, then the 406 in 03 - 04

    1993 Nissan Sunny 1.4lx for €400 in 2004
    1992 Saab 900 S Aero Lpt - €1850 in 2005
    1991 Saab 900 Turbo 16S - €1300 in 2006

    Total - €3550

But I've easily spent that again on the 91 Saab :)

Ok, to make myself feel better i'm going to add the approx trade-in prices or for the ones i still own, the current value imo

    1979 Fiat 127 20 punts scrap
    1981 Fiat 127 with plastic bumpers! 600 punts trade-in
    1987 Fiat Uno 1300 punts trade-in
    1993 Citroen AX 1.4d 5000 punts trade-in
    1994 Peugeot 306 1.9d 7000 punts trade-in
    1992 BMW 316i (e36) 6500 punts trade-in
    1995 Audi A4 1.8i (b5) 10500punts trade-in
2000 BMW 320d (e46) 15-18000euro current value (wife drives this now)
    1993 Mazda MX5 1.8i 7250euro private sale
    1999 Audi S4 2.7 Twin turbo 17750euro private sale
1976 Triumph Spitfire 5500 current valve
    2002 BMW 320d Touring 22000 current valve

    subtotal punts 30920 punts (39288euros)
    total 84788 euro

so thats 157969 - 84788 = 73181 euros total spent on purchasing cars.

J.C. thats even more depressing! think what i could have done with that money over the years!

    1994 Clio - Purchased for €1450 - Crashed W/O after three months
    1994 Clio - Purchases for €1600 - Scrapped
    Service costs approx €500

    1999 Opel Astra - Purchased for €6900.
Service costs to date €1500 in three years

Total cost in four years = €11950.00

Wow when you look at it like that its true when they say its easier to borrow to save rather than just save.

    April 1998 1989 Peugeot 405GLD Estate 104,000 €2,500 Sold €1,000
    October 1999 1995 Honda Civic LSi Coupe 92,000 €8,600
    April 2003 1995 Honda Accord LSi Coupe 84,000 €2,000 + Civic Sold €1,250
    March 2005 1998 BMW e39 520i SE 69,000 €12,000 Value €8,500 unmodified

    €25,100 spent, less €2,250 recouped = €22,850, less €8,500 current value = €14,350, or just under €1,700 per annum.

Insurance is a whole other story, as is the money spent doing up the BMW!!!

I sold her to a work colleague earlier this year, but the car itself was the fastest thing I’ve ever owned, and to the untrained eye people think its a 1.8T:D :D very funny at the traffic lights!

Had a few problems with it , exhaust manifolds had to be replaced, which cost lots of $$$$ because the engine had to be removed to get at the them.

Very smooth V6 engine, twin turbos (1 for 3 cylinders) means they spool up low down the revs, lots of power in every gear. 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds! (265bhp but for 500 euro it can be safely chipped to 315bhp and over) and Quattro means it goes round corners like on rails!

My advice ,look for insurance first! not many insurance companies will quote you, try allianz, www.brittoninsurance.com. It was 1000euro for me to insure (35 and fncb) 1000 road tax a year and anything from 15 to 25 MPG!! depending on how you drive.

If your after one Buy in the UK (unless you can get it here VRT paid already but very rear) Look for a 99 facelift B5 model (also called 99.5 model) with low mileage
They come with lots of extra’s as standard, but look out for recaro leather heated seats, sunroof, satnav/tv, BUT must have F.AUDI or Specialist S.H.

Pay anything from 8000stg to 11/12000stg for a really good example.

Good website is www.rs246.com and look in classifieds section, these guys are S4/RS4 nutters.

The S4 is a lovely car, but can be expensive to keep on the road. Watch those turbos, if one blows you have to replace both of them!!

That's good going, not many people can consistently make a profit selling on their own cars privately. I suppose if you buy it cheap in the first place and sell within a year like you, you can. But wait until you might like to buy something newer and more expensive, it will be very hard to break even, but again it depends on how much (or little!) you pay.

Agreed, but at the time i looked for 2nd hand ones first and there wasn't that many 320d at that time because they were only on the market less then 1 year.
so new was my only option or buy a audi A4 110 bhp at the time or the old 318tds or 325tds E36 bmw

    1988 Corolla 1.6 Executive £180 (€228) - sold for £160 (€203)
    1993 Primera 1.6Slx £3500 (€4445) - sold for €1,850
1993 BMW 520i £5500 (€6985) - sold for €2,850 (Plus an absolute fortune to keep the POS running)
    1990 Corolla 1.3 €340 - sold for €800
1993 Peugeot 605 2.0SLi €0 (Yep, zero) - sold for €450 minus battery and clutch
    1993 Safrane 2.0 Exec €300 - sold for €900
1995 Accord Aerodeck 2.0 €1250 - Current car but have spent/spending about €1500 extra on making it mechanically A1, mods, etc. - current value about €1500

So depreciation over 8 years and approx 180k miles is:

€6582 which is €823 per year or 3.7 cent per mile

Amazingly from 2001 to 2006 (And about 100k miles) I was actually UP 1500 on depreciation :-)

Worst car of the lot (In every way) was definitely the BMW - Best car of the lot (Again In every which way), without doubt, was the Pug 605!

Larry David I think you should attack Funxy - he's clearly too car-rich for the likes of you!
