So, any of you out there with a home cinema, what do you have when it comes to the audio side of home cinema?

I have a fairly moderate sized room, bearing in mind it does get used for other things also, but I have the following all purchased just over 12 months ago.

    Pioneer VSX-D514 AV receiver.
Kenwood 3 way floorstanding speakers (130w each) (mainly for just audio music)
    Yamaha NX-E130 satellite speakers x5 (100w each)
    Yamaha SW-P130 subwoofer

Mine is Humble but better than average , it will do me for now ,

I have a Sony STR790 hooked up to a Mordaunt short Avant premiere plus set of surrounds.
Everything plays either off my HTPC setup ( DVD Jukebox , and Audio Jukebox , through a Terratic Aureon 5.1 card ) or from My Pioneer 595 disc player ( Multi channel analog out ).
Im a big fan of SACD and DVD audio.

When I get rich Im getting and Pioneer AX10 and a set of Nautilus from Bowers and Wilkins.

My current system was built about 5 years ago.

Technics VSX something or other Amplifier - 6x120w
    Jazz Speakers DTS Decoder.
    Pioneer 514 CDRW
Philips 515 DVD (one of the original DVD players)
    Pioneer dvr433 HD DVD recorder

Speakers: Revolver 120w biamp'd biwired floorstander fronts, and 100w bookshelf rears, Wharfdale Centre and a 120w sub, cant remember the name.

I am looking at upgrading to an
Arcam avr350 amplifier with either System Audio 1550's, 1530's or B+W 603's as fronts.

    L.

Makes me cry reading some of the above posts!

I still leave at home and only have a crappy 5.1 system hooked up to my laptop, dvd recorder and xbox 360.

Moving into a new gaff and am looking around at the moment but this could be on the cards after a bit of research

    why just dts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 ComeOnMeath

No, not just DTS, but without doubt my preference for Movies that have it ;)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,766 Mod ✭✭✭✭mossym

full bitrate dts yeah, but there a re a few movies where the DD soundtrack is better than the DTS..worth trying both...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 ComeOnMeath

    Absolutely!!

Very little between them anyhow IMO, both sound fantastic and can make an average movie that much better. Money well spent I reckon!!

    Hey ComeonMeath...

I am just about to buy a set of the Canton CD101s and the Yammy 459.

I see you list a centre speaker separately from the CD101. Did you upgrade the centre speaker from the one that comes with the CD101 set? And if yes any reason why?

    thanx.

The Yam 459 as you probably know is 6.1, the CD101 is a 5.1 setup. You can use the centre speaker as the centre rear and upgrade the front centre to the CD50. TBH, the CD20 (I think its called), i.e. the centre speaker that comes with the CD101 was fantastic, and the CD50 IMO is not that much better, but if you want an extra surround speaker for the 6.1 you have to buy a minimum 2xCD10 speakers. So you are left with one extra, so buying the CD50 makes more sense if you want the full 6.1. But if you are happy with 5.1, well take my word for it the CD101 as its packaged is fantastic and you'll be very happy. Good choice :D

My room design does not allow for 6.1/7.1 - so I will be using it as a traditional 5.1 setup!

Good to see that ur using a 459 - from reading stuff I was half worried that the 459 would not power the 101s well enuff - but you seem to be happy, so that takes that concern away!

Yep, certainly no issue powering the speakers. I will say the setup of the AMP is everything though. They say you should set the speakers to small, I found this not great for music and much better set to large. However this gives way too much bass during a good DTS movie, so bass volume I have set to half way on the bass itself, crossover is set to around 80/90. I have the centre speaker that bit louder than the surround speakers. Tinkering is the best way to put it, it takes a while and the speakers themselves need to be run in for about 100 hours. When you hear people talking about the 459, it's mostly in relation to major floorstanding speakers, the 459 might be a bit overwhelmed here alright, but for this lot it's more than enough.

Nothing too fancy myself, Its in a very small room so Really it does the job. But I am still after a whole new seperates system sometime.

    32" Samsung LCD
5.1 500 Watt Samsung Surround system
    Samsung DVD player Component output
    Sky+ 80GB
    Xbox 360 & PS2
    HTPC - AXP 2200+, 1GB DDR etc..

Its all in a garage conversion / Computer room so yeah, Its prety nice for a small room. But definetly, Can't wait to get up a whole new seperates system, But I'm just spending all my money else where. All going on audio equiptment for recording and computer equiptment.

    My System

    Sony 32 inch flatscreen
    Sony DCP-S725D DVD Player
    Sony STR DB 1070 AV
    Sony Active subwoofer
    Bose Passive subwoofer
    Bose Acustimas 5 speakers centre /left /right
    Celestian 7's rear

And what you really must have - a old detached house with 2 foot stone walls and no immediate neighbours. Not being snobby but I think if you live in an apartment or semi detached house best bet is a packaged Home cinema kit. You only really get the most from it when you can turn the vol to max. When I added the Sony active sub- 3 pictures fell off the wall .....

You can have quality at a low volume -what I was referring to was the full blown cinematic experience!!

Tv is the Philips 42PF5421 LCD which I think I have gone on about enough for now :D

DVD player is the Sony DAV-SR1 with 700w speaker system. Although its an out of box all in one job the sound is great. Check out a review here http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=5554

The living room itself is quite large and also has a higher ceiling at 9ft, so the sound really wraps around well. Best part about being detached is just pumping the volume up and feeling the walls shake.

My home cinema system consists of just some humble headphones. I am only going to buy a surround system if I can somehow make my room sound proof so I don't disturb the neighbours. Any suggestions?

    Marantz Sr400 (I think) 6.1 amp
    Tannoy 607s as fronts
    Kef Centre
Yamaha Active Sub (also a Tsumami Sub a.k.a. REL needing a new woofer;) )
