What are the PCIx1 and PCIx4 slots used for?

Can someone tell me what these 2 slots are for and why they take up space on my motherboard even though I see nothing on the market that seems to support them? Its either PCI or PCIx16. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what they are used for?

they are a kind of repalcement for normal pci... not much around for them yet though.. you can get nic's for the pcix1 slots though but they are more expensive than the bog standard pci 1's....

There are graphics cards for pci-e 1x slots as well, Matrox do some and there is an X1300Pro Variant as well.
