SB in this hand seems an OK player probably not a big winner but vaguely has some knowledge.
About 30mins before I raised from button, he calls in sb, flopps KK7, he check raises me, and pushes to my re raise on his cr.

    2/4
    CO ($135.25)
    Button ($310) [Hero]
    SB ($696)
    BB ($300)
    UTG ($100.68)
    MP ($375.50)

Hero is Button with 4h, 5h
    Preflop: (5 players, $0)
2 folds, Hero calls $4 and raises $8, SB calls $10 and raises $20, BB folds, Hero calls $20

    Flop: 6s, Jh, 5d (2 players, $62)
SB bets $55, Hero calls $55

    Turn: 7c (2 players, $172)
    SB checks, Hero.................?

what i'd do is probably pot it but this is the kind of situation where i've lost a ton of money, and i am wondering why you even bothered?

pot bet is 175ish which would leave me around $50 left...

So its really a push for 225 or fold or a smaller bet but not pot.

or play preflop / flop differently

If you bet, its fairly unlikely you will get action from a worse hand. You have a pair, and his most likely range is an overpair or AQ/K, so I think this is a clear check. He will often be checking here to check raise all in with an overpair.

If we check behind on the turn, do we call/fold a bet of roughly $100 on a blank river, or are we checking to basically give up this pot?

Easy fold preflop. Your stack is too small to have proper implied odds. You have no history which indicates that he is reraising light.

As played, the turn is a check for the reasons HJ stated.. I fold to any decent bet on the river assumong we don't improve.
