As part of a college assignment I have to compare two servers found on the web. In our instructions it says to compare two brands of servers so I assume they mean from two differnet companies. Now, the only company I can think of or find on the web that lets you look at their server spec. including prices is Dell. Does anyone know of any others? Thanks

Trying to find one located in Ireland. I can't exactly reccomend that "someone" purchase their server from the US. I had the same bother with the IBM site, only servers are listed from the US. HP don't show the prices on their site so that makes it pretty much impossible to compare and I couldn't find any listed dealers on their site either. I'll have a look at Sun, thanks;)

hp dont sell direct so if ya want a price u will need to ring a reseller such as PFH technologies (based in cork)

for you project id recommend doing the following :

get the specs and prices for :

    sun solaris server

    hp proliant dl blade

    dell poweredge blade

then when you have all the details for the three analyse the following :

    performance
    flexiblity
    support
    cost

you really need to be looking at this from a total cost of ownership to the company and what benefits each server could provide.

have you been told what the servers will be required to do? as this will be a factor as to what you really need

No, we haven't been told at all what the server is used for, any potential budget or even the size of the company or the sector it operates in. It's a fairly basic assignment, dealing with the basics of pc technology and so forth. I'm just having a tough time finding a site similar to Dell. At the moment Apple seems to be the best bet...

Sun listed prices are rarely the price that gets paid for them. The same applies to dell, but my impression is that Sun discount more heavily.

Hard to compare sun boxes with dell boxes though. They run different CPU's and OS's for a start.

    yeah they are completely different.

i reckon the closest you will get to each other would be the dell poweredge and hp proliant blades.

spec the server and ring pfh technologies and they will give u a price.

make sure u look at the support contract cost aswell

if it does not have to be available in ireland try gateway! Same idea as dell.

Aren't Sun using AMD chips as well as SPARC now?

Good luck with PFH, you'll need it.

yeah, they are a shower of wank3rs. i deal with them every day as a bright spark in my job ordered a rake of hp dl380 proliants off them.

it took 5days last week to get a new scsi disk off them that had failed in our SAN. five bloody days. wanna know why it took so long? cos they insisted on sending out an engineer to fit it!!!!!!

You should have purchased an agreement with HP then, not the reseller... always a bad mistake. HP's support is excellent when sourced from them.

for a start i didnt purchase the support agreement.

i dispute that hp support is excellent. thats the funniest thing ive heard all week. from my personal experience (and i used to work for them)

hp support is probably the worst crowd ive come across with the exception of eirscum
