Bus Éireann to Invest in State of the Art Digital CCTV

Bus Éireann is to install a new state of the art digital security camera system on board its city bus fleets in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford and has announced that going forward all new vehicles will come with high specification CCTV fitted as standard.

The company is investing in digital CCTV to help tackle the anti-social behaviour and vandalism which is increasingly impacting operations nationally.

“Bus Éireann is responsible for the security of 48 million customers annually as well as 1300 drivers. Measures such as the introduction of digital CCTV systems help create the safest possible environment for our passengers and front line staff. CCTV is a proven deterrent to crime and frequently leads to prosecutions for vandalism and anti-social behaviour, which unfortunately are serious and costly problems for us,” said a spokeswoman.

High specification digital CCTV systems are to be fitted on all City buses in Galway, Cork, Limerick and Waterford. A total of 180 buses will be upgraded.

The new digital system replaces the analogue system currently used on part of the fleet and greatly enhances the quality, coverage and reliability of footage recorded.

Each bus will be fitted with up to eight cameras which be placed in the lower saloon, stair well, drivers cab, upper saloon and a camera will also be fitted to the front of the bus looking forward in the direction of travel.

Images from each camera are recorded sequentially every two seconds in such a way as to allow all on-bus activities to be monitored.

    Security Benefits of CCTV:
Helps to create a safer environment for employees and customers
Deters theft, violence, vandalism and anti social behaviour
    Helps to identify offenders
Provides evidence in prosecutions by the Gardaí
Provides 24 7 security and enhanced remote monitoring

    Benefits of digital CCTV:
    Never stops Recording
    Higher image quality
    Faster image Search and Retrieval
    Superior Archiving capabilities
Instant Playback at the touch of a button

The project, which represents an investment of €1.7 million, is being funded by the Department of Transport. Installation will commence in early 2007 once a tender process for a supplier is completed.

Going forward every new bus and coach introduced into the Bus Éireann fleet will come equipped with high specification CCTV as standard.

This will include the 160 vehicles understood to be promised to Bus Éireann by the government under Transport 21 and 60 new Expressway coaches to be purchased by the company through its own resources, set to come into service in the next year.

CCTV systems are also fitted on the 20 new purpose-built yellow school buses which were introduced into the School Transport fleet in September 2006, 30 more of which are currently on order.
