Hardly a surprise. I think it's a great appointment for Mayo. A decent backroom team as well. Hopefully we can have a good league run and peak about the third Sunday of next September.

I presume thats the 'Ballina' Tommy Lyons and not the 'idiot' Tommy Lyons. Yeah negotiations were going on all last week didn't want to say to much about it in case it jinxed it. He's a brilliant manager, one of the best in the country, he's been there done that which was perhaps Mickey Morans downfall. I'm very pleased tbh I thought if they got rid of M&M they had to get a really good manager in in his place and they've got the best. I just hope the county board keep their noses out and let Johnno run it as he wants to run it.

Does anyone how long a term he has in charge? Cos it doesn't say it in that report.

    Yeah, Ballina Tommy Lyons.

As it's pretty much the same county board that was there when he was 'shafted' last time, I'd imagine it's on his terms.

    3 years apparently

Good stuff I was half afraid it was a one year deal with the election and all

I think opinion polls have shown that his best bet is to stick with the football:D

Do the Mayo lads really believe that ye will win the All-Ireland with O'Mahoney??? he has proven credentials - he won us 2 all-irelands (and should have had a third but for Derek Savage being too greedy in 2000).

If Mayo are to win an All-Ireland I think it will be with him - if he doesn't get ye one then who will??? Like our hurlers, Mayo football is crying out for an All-Ireland win but you have to be patient - if you expect O'Mahoney to win inhis first year then you could be in for a rude awakening.

If we can win Liam McCarthy next year, ye can win Sam. :D

I do think we will win it with him (expect might be to strong a word).

I don't think we will win it next year thats why I was hoping his term was for longer than one year (which it is so I'm delighted:D :D )

I certainly think the current squad is good enough. I'd like to see Kieran MacDonald give it another year or 2. I feel sorry for the likes of James Nallen who's probably coming to the end of his career and I don't think there's a more deserving player of an All Ireland medal in the country at the minute given all he's done for club and county over the past 12 or 14 years.

I think the whole management team package as was confirmed last night is a positive for football in Mayo. It could well give new motivation to players who were on the verge of packing it in. It's reflected in the betting markets as well - Mayo are 12/1 today to win Sam in 2007 from the 14/1 they were yesterday. Not a big cut in price but a reflection on the new management team nonetheless.

So will his tenure be deemed a failure if after two years Mayo have not lifted sam maguire. I think they have to do it within the next two years because McDonald will be past his best after that.

Is it true Martin Carney is in the management team as a special advisor?

I think Mayo need Paul McKenna :) instead

I thought he'd appoint his two brothers Fr. Dan and Fr. Steve as selectors because thats what we probabley need, a prayer.

Glad to hear he is part of the setup!

I wonder will he still be employed by RTE? I enjoy his commentary and analysis of games.

To be honest,I can't see Mayo winning an all ireland for many years. As much as it hurts to say it,Mayo are the biggest reknowned choke artists of gaelic football. To further dampen spirits,I can't see anybody touching Kerry for next year again.

I think O mahoney might restore some pride in Mayo football.Hopefully if they do get to the final next year, they will be more prepared and actually give us a good game for the final because Mayo are one of the few teams that deliver great matches.Asking O Mahoney to deliver Sam will be a huge expectation. What people seem to believe is that when a team does not do so well, the manager gets the axe.I think O Mahoney will need to address the psychological issue Mayo have with the final.I don't believe Mayo played to their full potential because of this, otherwise they would have won in 96,97 and possibly 2004.

Mayo ARE capable of beating Kerry but its time this issue of bottling it must be done with once and for all.

He certainly will. Thats what he's there for. It is the big challenge with Mayo cos we have the players and the will.

I disagree here. IMO we played to our potential in the first game in '96 and pretty good in the replay. We were unlucky that we came up against a never say die team in Meath, unlucky we had a sh1te goalie who let the ball bounce over the bar, unlucky we had the wrong player sent off etc. It was only after '96 that players started beliving we were fated never to win an All Ireland.

most of the mayo lads know how to win all irelands via club or u21. john has won 3 all irelands (2 senior and 1 u21 for galway).

feel really sorry for mayo this year, was at the game put a downer on our great result against kerry.

to be honest, and i know i would get lyniched by saying this but i find kiernan mac one of the most infuriating players around. yes he has excellent vision in his play and passing and he does have heavy shoulders sometimes having to carry the team.

being at that match you see more than you would on tv and i agree what many said after that he was carrying an injury, that was very clear to see.

but anyway some of the frees and point chances he missed would have gone over the bar if he went old school and thumped the ball, instead he went for the fancy chip or sidefoot making it look like a great point. what i am trying to say is that sometimes he should keep it simple.

as for john getting the job i hope the mayo people give him time.great work by the board

The 1989 team, under O'Mahoney, was a good one. They should have beaten Cork in that final. They scored a second half goal, but failed to build on it, going down 0 - 17 to 1 - 11. The 1996 was a very good team and threw it away on both days. the 1997 was not as good. The 2004 were not bad and the 2006 team are better than they showed on All-Ireland Final day. I'd love to see Mayo winning an All-Ireland, and I am a Dub. 56 years, as it will be next year, is a long time to wait.

I wouldn't give the board that much credit. It was due to people power that they had to ask him. He accepted on his own terms. Don't forget this is esssentially the same board who threw him out 15 yrs ago only to be proved drastically wrong when he won 2 All Irelands at senior and one at U21 with Galway.

I think it will be the year after next that we see Mayo in the final again. It seems to take Mayo a year to get over the previous season.Mayo and the county board must give O Mahoney time to prove themselves.

As for the final itself next year,I have a very strong feeling we will see Dublin there if they don't run into Kerry along the way.Mayo were dealt a huge blow this year,Armagh are an ageing side and we don't know what to expect from Tyrone as they were hit with injuries and key players retiring.

We might see the same four teams in the semis next year.Cork,Kerry,Mayo and Dublin.Surprise packages may include Longford,Limerick and Clare.

A bit off point but I think Mayo will be a big force to be reckoned with, especially the year after next.I can certainly see them winning the national league this year.

Mayo deserved to win sam last year, they just choked on the final day. I know a few members of the team and they put in so much work over the last year, they were training EVERY single day! I really hope they win Sam this year for players like Kevin O'Neill, James Nallen, McDonald and D Brady who really deserve an all ireland medal at this stage!

Yeah they're all staying on for one more crack at it (apart from DB). Jimmy Nallen works around these here parts and left the Xmas party early as he was back in training already.

mayo have produced fine footballers and ambasadors to the game, with regard all the names recently mentioned i very much doubt any gaa fan would begrude the,

omahony if given 2 years may see them to at least a semi final in his second term, but what will happen if he is elected in the general elections? is it true that he is a fg nominee, i notice but could be wrong, fg always had a strong support base for fg

This post makes little sense but I gues what your trying to say is if Johnno gets elected to the Dail will he leave/become very hands off with the Mayo job. IMO due to the fact that he signed for a couple of years he has already thogut about this. Lets face it our politicans do feck all anyway especially backbenchers and especially during the summer when they have longer breaks than the teachers. So I'd say he would stay and has aplan in place for the eventuality

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,062 ✭✭✭walrusgumble

ye that is what i was asking, but does he have a chance in winning da elections (i assume he running in mayo area, which i thought had a good fg following)

fair point on the politicans doing nought during summer and him already planning things out

FG does have a good following in Mayo they had 3 TDs here until recently. At the moment they have the only 2 TDs garaunteed of seats (Kenny and Ring) the other 3 seats are a toss up between 2 FF candidates, Beverly Flynn, Gerry Cowley and Johnno. Johnno hasn't polled that well but no poll has been done since he took the Mayo job. IMO he's a fifty-fifty chance of taking a seat. It will come down to him and the 2nd FF for the last seat.
