    Hi,
Does anyone know anywhere that could fit a new DVD drive into an IBM laptop? How much should it cost around?

Also, where can you pick up a tiny screw kit for loosening them tiny screws?

    Any feedback appreciated:)

Do it yourself - it couldn't be any easier. All you have to do is take out a screw or two, pop out the drive and in with the new one. No messing, no wires, nothing.

Any boardsie would do it I'm sure. Very straightforward job on most laptops.

Your local chemist should have an "eyeglass repair kit" for a fiver or less which has a lovely tiny screwdriver in it.

All laptop cdroms / floppies that I've seen clip out (though I have only seen a limited amount).

Yeah, I'm half way through doing it myself, but I may have disconnected a soldered piece when I took it apart so I wouldn't really want to touch that.

I'm stuck because I need a small screwdriver for a tiny screw and don't have one in the house:o

Doesn't seem like the type of screwdriver you'd get in a DIY shop, do computer shops have screwdriver kits? Where do all the tweakers and modders get their kits?:)

Would ya believe me if I told you I use a fine pointed blade thats about 2 foot long? Its some crazy ceramic sword thing my parents gave me from eastern europe. I don't have any screwdrivers at the moment and I find the fine point works pretty well. :D

Yeah though, Pc World or Maplins etc sell cheap cases of small screwdrivers

You can get a set of watchmaker's screwdrivers from any hardware/€2 store.

What model of laptop is it? Any IBM I have had (3 in total) the CD/DVD drive just popped out after releasing a catch. I have never needed a screwdriver.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Nah, there's definitely no release on it. It's a permanent drive, not one replaceable with a floppy drive or any other. I definitely need one of the tiny screwdrivers to detach something to attach the new drive to it though:o

    Hi Cormie,

Is it a torx screw by any chance? Looks like this.

I've got a really small torx screwdriver (T6), plus a set of jewellers cross-head and normal screwdrivers too, so I could give it a go if you like (you know where I live!).

I might take you up on that Alun, thanks:)

It's not the torx one, it's just a small cross head one, maybe 1.8mm at a guess. I could just bring up the two drives because I just need to put the attachment on the new one to fit it in properly. I'll have another look around and see if I can find one first anyway!
