MMA League 2006 Final Round - Results

Another year finished in the League, and what a year it has been! Almost two hundred fighters have taken part in the 4 legs of the League this year, the majority of those being first timers its a great sign for the growth of MMA in this country!

The event in Dublin ran off yesterday almost without a hitch, 59 fighters in all the divisions gave all they had and made it a very competitive final round. As always events like these take a lot of energy from a lot of different people and I need to thank some people without whom the event would never have happened.

First of all the host, Colm O'Reilly for getting the venue and entries organized, not an easy task especially with the late venue change! Thanks too to Ian Ward for helping us source the Bosco, which turned out to be a perfect spot for it.
Michelle Shields and Keith Norton for keeping the event running continuously during the day.
Clive, Shane and Colm (again!) for refereeing and admin work updating the League in real time.
Sean for manning the camera all day with such enthusiasm, and last but not least Jim for helping out with a variety of tasks that kept the going so smooth.

The fights will be available from http//www.fightauthority.com in a couple weeks. I announced yesterday that the League has entered into a strategic partnership with Fight Authority and they will be hosting the videos of all the League events moving forward.

Next year's League kicks off on the 24th of February in NUI, Galway Sports Hall. Not every Rookie will be promoted to the veteran's division, it will depend on performance in the League this year, who you have fought and how you did. The promotions will be announced in January.

I think the vetting procedure is a good idea for the mmaleague but I always think perhaps taking it another step forward could be beneficial especially in keeping people competing. How about Rookie, Intermediate, Veteran sections? Rookies for newcomers, Intermediate for people that may have competed before and Veteran for people that have been around a bit, people that are preparing for Semipro etc.

Kudos to Mark and all the competitors - sixty odd matches and aside from various bumps and bruises, only one injury. Hope you're feeling better Roper!

A few matches stood out to me - Aisling versus Debra, Gymrabbit's second fight (sorry I can't remember the other fighters name), and of course a very tasty slam from the Cannon.

    Funniest moment of the day:
    What's he doing?
I think he's trying to tire him out.
    But that dude's Polish!

LOL @ "but that dude's polish"

I think that quote was me, and it's funny because it's true.

Mark was calmer than usual on Saturday, but then again, I wasn't really in the mood to annoy him! :D

    Roll on 2007!

Much better thanks Clive. Still a bit... tender... but I'll be okay. Worst thing was having to sit through the torture scene in the new Bond film that same night. Anyone who's seen it will know what I mean.... uuughhhh.

    Another good event!

Text message I received from TheShane on Saturday evening:
As I sit on the train musing, i compare roper's reaction to a bollock shot to james bond. Roper would have talked.

I bet one of Bond's didn't go "in" though... :o

    Well done to Wardy!

I used to work with him years back on the lifts and escalators. I think he did Kenpo back then. Does he still have the vanilla ice hair cut ? :p

    Actually, yes he does!

I'm beginning to think there's a jinx involved here. My first Amateur fight, a guy kneed me in the nuts, I was okay after about 30 seconds, but when I took the cup off later, it was in two pieces. That was a lucky escape. About a month later in training someone was passing my guard and landed their shin into my groin, it didn't hurt, but when I took off my cup later- it was in two pieces. I got another knee in training a couple of months after that, pretty sore, and we rolled later and there was this clicking noise from my shorts. When I took the cup out, guess what, it was cracked down the middle. I went through 3 cups in the space of about 4 months. I invested in a metal cup after that, which came loose on Saturday...

Hi Barry, sorry about the knee to the groin, hope you recover in time and kick ass this sat in Belfast. We are now calling that shot " The knee of vasectomy"

Is that Mr. Mackey slagging my lovely haircut, if so do you have shares in the Irish Fighter mag, in the last few editions you're on every second page. Only joking Jon, glad to see you doing well for yourself.

Big thanks to all the gang who ran the event, it turned out to be a great day. Thanks to John and the SBG guys for helping Ais and myself train for the event and to our students and friends who came to cheer us on and to see if i really fight in my underpants.( No they are Vale Tudo shorts.)

jon you should consider setting up a stall at some of these events and similar. losts of people at these comps look like the type of people that use supplements.
