What Kauto lacks in Cheltenham it will pick up in Aintree.

Ok here's where I'm at atm.

WORLD HURDLE - Really looks a penalty kick for Black Jack Ketchum doesn't it? As of now we have no idea where Asian Maze is headed so Ingles Drever looks the main opposition and thus, to me, makes it a penalty kick.

TRIUMPH HURDLE - Katchit is very decent but could be vulnerable to a high class flat recruit like Mountain. So many horses have arrived on to the scene with big reputations (Pouvoir etc) and have not delivered so atm it's a risk on Mountain being the exception.

SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE - First off I've come to the opinion that last year's champion bumper was below par so Im gonna oppose all those that have come out of it. So, with Tidal Bay already beating Kicks for Free twice (and still Kicks for free is favourite) he'd be my favourite of those two. Ouninpohja has proved to be okay at best and to my delight was put in his place by De Soto (2nd in a much better champion bumper). I'm keeping a really close eye on Tipperary All Star and Cork All star this year too. I've backed them both already this season and they're going the right way about becoming favourite horses of mine. (I think Cork All Star could be the better of the two)...anyway, at the moment, my tentative choice is Tipperary All Star.

SUN ALLIANCE NOVICE CHASE - This is all about Denman really but I'm just not a fan of the horse and I don't really know why. I haven't thought too much about this one except when I was thinking about backing Patsy Hall in it last week but didn't My biggest regret so far this season.

GOLD CUP - Ah. The first real contentious race...Let there be no doubt about it, if Kauto Star wins this, he'll be a superstar. Let me watch the Durkan tomorrow and get back to you.

CHAMPION HURDLE - Sorry...can't be having Detroit City, Straw Bear, or Desert Quest....in fact, I think England's leading hope could be Noble Request but we'll say no more about that for the time being. An Irish Horse is going to win this, I'm convinced of that and you'd be silly to look past Brave Inca, Iktitaf, Hardy and Mac's Joy. Look past Harchibald all you want.

Ok I'm tired of writing now...I'll get back to this later.

Macs Joy or Iktataf for the champion hurdle
    Newmill for the champion chase
Inglis drever for the world hurdle (BJK is the worst value favourite ever, still to beat a decent horse, beating blazing bailey at 4/11 proved nothing we didn't already know)
War of Attririon for the gold cup again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

WORLD HURDLE - BJK and Asian Maze (18/1)

    TRIUMPH HURDLE - Mountain (18/1) && My Petra (28/1)

SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE - Tipperary All Star (16/1)

SUN ALLIANCE NOVICE CHASE - Boychuk (26/1) and Cailin Alainn (23/1)

GOLD CUP - Kauto Star (5/2)

CHAMPION HURDLE - Hardy Eustace (12/1)

    ARKLE - Afsoun (24/1)

    B. PROP NOV HURDLE - Aux Le Bahnn (small antepost bet at 69/1)

BUMPER - Cork All Star (9/1)

RYANAIR CHASE - Our Vic (16.5/1)

Outside of Cheltenham I've done a bet on Garvivonnian for the Aintree Grand National at 99/1

The Listener has to have a great chance for the Gold Cup after his impressive performance beating BOS on Irish soil. He jumped superbly and is a juicy 14/1 an-post.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

As has been said before somewhere, he won't have the ground he likes at Cheltenham.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 225 ✭✭00dyel

ive backed Detroit City but after seeing what Ruby Walsh (who is the best jockey ever IMO) can get out of Brave inca im worried now

I have confidently backed the last 3 winners of the champion bumper and,on what i've seen so far,im going to side with Noel Meade's GEM DALY.Was at Leopardstown last thursday and i was very impressed with the way it won,and hopefully will progress as the ground improves come march.Generally available at odds of 16/1.Anyone out there agree/disagree?

Fair play to ye as its a hard race to find the winner of midger and you have found the last 3,so stick at what you are doing as it seems to be working.

I don't believe for one second that you confidently backed Hairy Molly last year when even the connections of the horse didn't have a bet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Tush

Mr Mullins may have something up his slieve as he normally does for this race.

Fade2black,myself and around another 2000 people all over Kerry had some juicy e/w bets on Hairy Molly last March at 33/1.There was plenty of talk in the two or three weeks prior to Cheltenham of Hairy Molly finishing into a place in the Champion Bumper, all coming from sources close to the yard.

    I don't believe a word of it!!! ;)

I'm still waiting for Pressgang to make his seasonal debut...anyone know anything about this one?

Not sure if that horse remains in training anymore Fade.

What gives you that idea Tush?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Tush

Looking through his website the horse gets no mention, thats if its still with Webbers yard.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

Ah...tis a pity. He could be dead for all we know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭Crumbs

Pressgang is out for the season from an injury he picked up in the bumper. But very much alive and expected back on track next season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

    Good stuff.

I watched a horse called Leche Bottes run a cracker a couple of seasons ago before falling at the final hurdle. I waited patiently for him to return to the track but to no avail. I sent the pipe yard a mail and I received a reply in Martin's name to tell me that the horse was dead.

    Cailin Alainn-
The toughest mare i've ever seen,if she jumps the last fence with denman she wont be passed.Currently 10/1 for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase. It will be my Irish Banker of the Cheltenham festival.

    Darkness-
My each way bet for the gold cup, betfair are giving some amazing prices on it for the race around 60.3 for a place. The trainer is the best in England to bring a horse back from a layoff(Charlie Egerton). No doubt about it going up the hill and it has the form to snatch a place.

    Poquelin-

It was bred to be a classic winner and was the apple of Andy Stewarts eye on the flat.It has the speed and abilty to run well in the truimph hurdle at odds of around 20/1 at the moment.

    Lough Derg-
I cant see it beat Black Jack Ketchum but at 40/1 it may well get placed at nice odds.

yeah aintree getting more popular every year for travelling irish -dont think i could last the pace of two festivals abroad-usually go down to punchestown in april for the festival there not as hectic as the english ones

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 203 ✭✭keepitquiet

im not goig to gld cup day it was to packed last yr and i almost missed a bet as i couldnt get out of the bar. it was no place for the ladies as manners went out of the window with many. im going on the thursday tho:) im one of those luky ppl whose birthday is on the festival week:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

theres nothing like the festival, no other race meeting compares
the atmosphere at the course is terrific and the banter/arguments in the hotel before and after racing is brilliant

cant wait to go over in march.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,669 ✭✭✭Colonel Sanders

I'll be there for the first two days. Great meeting. Since they limited the crowd to 55,000 on the first three days you can actually get around the betting ring. Gold cup day is an absilute disaster.

Went to the november meeting this yr, would highly recommend it.

    Agree with this.

Went last year for the four days (actually went over on the monday). I listened (not watched) the Gold Cup in the car park as I was that sick. Beef or Salmon hadn't drank water for two days before the race and i reckon even he was feeling better than me :) aintree , if anywhere, this year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭knighted_1

going for the four days this year again -agreed about gold cup day nightmare i tend to take a break and watch one or two races from the centre of the course chuck wagon included hot coffee etc and then back into the throws of things -i end up needing a holiday when i come back from cheltenham-used to go to stratford on the monday for irish day great craic but makes it a long week -and then theres the 21 club absolute bedlam but seem to go back year after year

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭knighted_1

but one moan i do have about cheltenham is that they were giving out that the dress was too casual in the club enclosure bar -what do they expect when all they seemed to serve all day was warm cans of carling black label -it is after all supposed to be the light hearted lager lol

they cant have it all ways

any one in the stands last year when barry dennis was heckled by the crowd after been refused entry back into the club enclosure?

    Lay Kauto Star big time.

Also, back War of Attrition. It will win by 10l if the ground stays reasonably firm and will win by only 5l otherwise

Yes. On business though. Will be working there.

Should be a great Cheltenham but it certainly looks like fewer Irish winners this year than last year.

Do what you like with this information. Also expect war of Attrition to pretty much stick at the 5/1 currently available. Some of the bookmakers offering 4/1 will push it out in the coming months but its not likely to go over 11/2 at any stage unless the ground really goes against it or of course if it gets injured.

:D , "information" by telling people to back the reigning gold cup champion. thanks a lot.

What reason behind laying KS big time Finn ?????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭knighted_1

i think at this stage u all know my views on ks -while i wont be laying him i will have my first lumpy bet this season on woa if he stays at 5/1 with good ground this horse is imo a value bet at the price

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 203 ✭✭keepitquiet

its all about the ground rly thts y antepost on WOA is pointless. i think tht laying kauto star is stupid tho if ur backing woa... anyone fancy anything else other than these two?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

I think 5/1 (on betfair) for Exotic Dancer in the Ryain Air Chase is a ridiculous price and it should drift out over the coming months. I took Our Vic at 16.5/1 and it's 22/1 now - the joys of antepost! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Morgans

Our Vic is more likely to go for the Gold Cup, and isnt a bad ew shout for the race.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

If it does I will be laying enough to make the Easter Bunny jealous. :) I really fancied it for the Ryanair Chase as I thought it wasn't going to go for the Gold Cup. A good each way shot wherever it goes.

Interesting discussion with Don Mc Clean last night on Newstalk regarding the going for The Festival. This is the first year that the course will be completely and consistently watered in an attempt to reduce the fatalities which were seen last year will make the going good to soft which will be a big change to the good ground that normally is seen at the festival. This has to be a major parameter in any ante post bet.
