This'll probably get overshadowed by the impeding Wii launch, but it still deserves its own thred. The original Yoshi's Island is probably my favourite SNES game... eleven years on and we're finally getting a true sequel.

Ordered the game off CDWOW a few days ago, so I should see it soon.

I'm half way through world 2, and its a great game. I had hours and hours and hours of fun getting 100% on each level on YI1, and I'm having fun doing the same here. Harder than the first, though..

More of the same, but in this case, not a bad thing.

    Excellent!
I've only just completed the first one, I'd no idea this was even in the pipeline. :D

It's yoshis island for crying out loud. I think the money would be far better spent on it rather than some 360 shovelware.

Played the rest of world 2 this morning..... took me 1 hour, 20 minutes to finish from 2-5 to 2-8. Value!

Was that down to the actual hardness of the game or is it just down to perfectionism?(Is that even a word:p)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Perfectionism more than anything. I got 90+ on most of them. Need to go back to them again (some of the levels are huge, so finding all coins/flowers is going to take a while).

I've had this game for a few days now... slightly disappointing. No way does it have the edge that the first Yoshi's Island had all those years ago, and continues the notion that Nintendo are taking things too safe as far as new games go.

First of all, the same reason why I thought New Super Mario Bros. was awful: the overabundance of lives. Back in the day of 2D, getting an extra life in a game actually had some significance. Right now I'm on the second world and have 80+ lives. So I won't be seeing Game Over anytime soon.

The sound is also quite average. The fantastic music in the first Yoshi's Island had quite a dark tone for a Mario game. This one opts for a more upbeat feel throughout akin to say Yoshi's Story or the Paper Mario games, which is unfortunate.

It's still works great as a platformer however. The new babies are a welcome addition and the same great level designs/bosses are there. Plus, the use of two screens is a neat idea.

It's strange though. Generally I'd be happy with Nintendo sticking the same tried-and-tested formula that works, but in this case it just feels like a step in the wrong direction.

What on earth?? Have you never played Super Mario World? One of the greatest games of all time from back in your "day of 2D" threw more extra lives at you than you could possibly know what to do with. Even Super Mario Bros 3 saw the collection of extra lives filling up rather quickly.

And speaking of the game over screen, is it really that big a deal to go back about two or maybe three levels to the last checkpoint?

In this age of save games (since SMB3) the challenge was provided not in limiting your lives so you'd have to start the whole game over again if you died, but by making the game much much bigger and using ingenious design on each level to make each a unique experience.

I'm sure Super Mario Bros. 3 reseted the amount of lives you accumulated when you powered off the machine. Can't remember if World did the same.

In other 2D games like Ghouls and Ghosts and Metal Slug, getting an extra life actually feels like getting an extra life. These new (Nintendo) games are ridiculous though... I get a 5-up in Yoshi's Island DS for getting to level 5.

I completed a rock-hard (bonus) level in the game yesterday, so it is a challenging piece of work... must have lost about twenty lives. Hardly a dent in my collection, though it's nice to see the difficulty go up.

You'll have some trouble even keeping your mates once you start on Ouendan. Life sucker.

Actually, where did you purchase Ouendan from?

In fact, to anyone who has it, same question.

in SMB3, you could always replay the first few levels to clock up extra lives.

I quite like YI DS, another great platformer.

    Off-Topic

I got Ouendan off Lik-Sang about a week or two before they got destroyed by Sony. Alternate place you could try are Play-Asia where you should get it for about €45.

Be warned though: packages coming in from Hong Kong are subject to a heavy VAT levy slapped on by the Irish government. This only started happening recently.

I got my copy of Ouendan from play-asia. No customs charge.

    Cost about 40 euro.

Same here, although I was raped by customs when they charged me 40 quid for a package from Amazon.com delivered the same day!

Kind of worrying all this talk of easy to earn extra lives. I thought the amount of lives given out in New Super Mario Bros. was silly as well. I remember SMW and (especially) Yoshis Island being quite challenging games. Getting an extra life used to be a big dealin these games. Not anymore.

I never ran out of lives in SMW or Yoshi's Island, I don't think the challenge comes from hitting the game over screen every 10 minutes, but in the design of the levels and the difficulty in getting the secrets and stuff.

The Game Over screen in itself is a challenge, something that you are trying to avoid, and would add to the difficulty of getting secrets, etc. like you said.

The argument is simply that these so-called extra lives are left redundant. What's the point of them at all if they can be picked up so easily?

To make matters worse, in Yoshi's Island DS they grant a bonus game (like Roulettes and Flip Cards) for each completed world, where you can easily top-up a good few lives. It's so stupid. The original awarded these for finishing the game.

On a positive note, the level designs have now gotten alot more interesting; the first two worlds felt a little too similar to the original. So I must say, besides the ridiculousness of the 1-Ups, I'm thoroughly enjoying the platforming action now.
