I was thinking of buying a King Charles Cavlier pup. Only thing is though myself and the g/f both work 9-5, i've read these pups will settle in and get used to being on its own for the day but i'm just wondering is this true ? Anyone out there have one that is left on its own for the day ?

    Thanks

    agreed!
AND trust me, a KCC pup or adult, with separation anxiety is a wailing banshee morning noon and night.

Right and how in the name of god to your propose to toilet train a dog thats left on it's own all day long.
Assuming you buy an 8 week old puppy it is NOT to be outdoors until it has it's final vaccination - normally at 12 weeks
So you can't in all honestly leave an 8 week old puppy indoors for 8 hours a day - their bladder has about a one hour capacity MAX at that age never mind the pooh !

I seriously recommend you contact CKCS rescue - maybe someone on the board could cross post the details or if not you can obtain them on
    www.irishanimals.ie
    and adopt an adult dog.

A woman I work with has a KCS and he is hardly ever left alone - he is now 10 months old and just about housetrained. he is also very very upset when left alone.
I do beleive they are very much a companion dog and don't do well as either an outdoor dog or a left alone one.

Not preaching as my own are home during the day while I work but I adopted 2 adults at different times - a puppy is a full time job - I know from fostering experience when I have weeks off work !

    Thanks for the replies.

    SuzyS1972- Do you have 2 KC ?

I may be able to get a 6 month old KC, is that the better option ? Its really for the g/f, i do feel kinda bad at the thought of leaving the dog at home al day on its own.

A 6 month old is still a pup. I wouldn't leave a single dog alone all day no matter what age it is. I think you should be looking at adopting a pair of older dogs.

    Ahh ..thanks FrankNfurter ...:D

I' ll try to patch it together again ...sort of ...

wanting a puppy / a dog while there is nobody at home all day is a bad idea on several counts:

    - a pup is just like a baby. It needs constant care, training, contact and supervision. It does not raise itself. Puppyhood is the most formative period for a dog, neglect it then and it will have issues all its life. On the more finer points: a pup needs several feeds during the day, equally it will have to relieve itself several times during the day, also it will be adventurous and curious and try and get into/onto things and sink its teeth into anything and everything

-dogs of any age are social creatures and crave interaction. To keep them in solitary confinement for the best part of the day is just cruel

    - from the owners perspective:
A dog that is alone all day remains largely untrained, uncorrected and unruly. In fact it will make up its own rules. It will not be a joy to live with, in fact you will be fighting it constantly to gain some measure of control ...never mind the "mans best friend" kind of harmony that you were dreaming about when you first got it. Your dog willl be a nuisance at best, very likely a candidate for the pound as you might not be able to handle it.

A pup left alone all day will just wreck and soil everything (and possibly kill itself accidentally in the process)

So please don't get a dog and especially not a pup until the circumstances are right.

Getting two dogs may or may not half the boredom of the individual dogs (depends on how much they interact with each other ...some just dont), BUT it will with certainty not just double but at least quadruple all the possible behaviour issues that still go unchecked while they're alone all day.

This by the way is universal and not dependent on breed or type of dog. There is no such thing as a dog bred for being alone.

No I have 2 terrier mixes and a 3rd belonging to my ex who spends a lot of time here.
I just happen to be aware of some of the problems and am aware of the great work the rescue does

There is a good reason why alot of rescues don't rehome pups to peeps who work full time. I am on of those rescues ;). Pups need socialisation, they need to be toilet trained etc. You cannot do that if you are away for most of the day and it isn't fair on the dog either.
