Am I being fleeced?

I was looking at this camera last night. It's $289.99 on the website. So i decided to ring them and basically the European version of this camera is a little more expensive...$315.

    1. Is this normal that the european version is more expensive? Would the US version work in Ireland.

    2. As well at that, he quoted me $52 for a Dane Elec 2GB Secure Digital 150X High Speed Memory Card. He reckons that this is excellent value?

    3. He says that i must pay 8.3% tax on the camera and also on the memory card. Everything included, the total price is approx $396. He's giving me a free LCD screen protector!

Basically, i just want to find out if i'm paying over the odds for the camera and the memory card? Should i have to pay the tax on this? Is there anyway i cam claim the tax back on this? Any advice would be very much appreciated...

did you compare the cost of the camera with other websites?

$315 comes out at roughly €250, whereas technikdirekt have it listed at €297.. but then of course, technik arent the cheapest around. Check a few more websites before you commit... and indeed dont commit if you think the guy is having a laugh. There are plenty more retailers out there that'll gladly accept your money without spinning you a yarn in order to get it.

I think you are being fleeced.

For starters US dealers rarely have European versions.

It's strange that you have to pay the local sales tax.

ALSO - there is a distinct possibility that you will have to 21% VAT plus duty when it arrives here.

www.technikdirekt.de - a reliable company have the same camera for €297
which will have a proper European warranty.

7dayshop have the camera for £192 sterling and 28 for the same memory card.(probably cheaper postage too usually only £3.95)

I've checked around a lot. I've checked amazon, ebay, pixmania, 17photo.com, etc... The only other site where i've seen it cheaper is on dell.com here It's just complicated ordering off the dell.com website and you have to tick a box to say that you are exporting the camera, which means filling out more forms. My parents are in new york this weekend so i was going to get them to pick it up. I was just a little concerned when he raised the price because it was a 'european' version. Thanks for the reply

Thanks for that. I've read a lot of the comments and the main thing people seem dissatisified with is ordering online and shipping. I'm going to get the ould fella to pick it up so hopefully won't have any problems. Thanks anyway

Not really sure about the tax...

I rang Dublin airport the other day and asked them about this. They said that there shouldn't be any problem. The guy said that no one needs to know that there's a new camera being imported...until they check the case that it... :D

I asked about a warranty and there's a 1 yr US manufacturer warranty with it. It would cost an extra $70 to buy an international warranty. so if it breaks down i'll have to return it to the US which is kinda annoying

have you checked to see what the difference is between this "european" version and the normal one? have you considered that if there is a difference you may want the american one?

I asked him last night when he rang me and he said that the main difference was the plug for the camera dock. I should have questioned him some more on this. I'm not sure if i got the american one would i be able to get someone to change the plug on it. I'll try and contact him again.

well the voltage on the docks would be difference, so i suppose it would cost him more to get the EU versions in, but $25 seems a bit much

I bought a casio EX-S850 in the US from amazon delivered to an address in the US, picked up when on holiday. The power supply for the cradle takes both 220 and 110 volts and is compatible with 50-60 Hz frequency. All you need is an adapter plug (around 7 yoyos).

I checked the online manuals before taking the plunge.

Check the manuals for the S770 and see if it uses the same usb cradle and power supply.

    Good Luck.
