Procrastinating about getting iMac

Well, my trusty iBook G4, which I'm typing this on, is almost 2 1/2 years old and I'm finally thinking about upgrading and getting a 17" iMac. But while some people are impulsive spenders and suffer from buyer's remorse afterwards, I tend to procrastinate forever about whether I really need something or not. Right now I'm wondering if I should wait till leopard comes out or till next revision or the next generation of iMac.

What do you guys think? Any new iMac owners out there? Are you happy with your purchase?

Ask yourself one question and one question only....

Do you need it NOW or can you hang on a while?

I suppose I don't really need it now, no. But I want to have an intel mac before Leopard arrives and it seems like the next imac revision may come after that. Also Apple's product cycles are so unpredictable and I don't want to be waiting forever. And as much as I love my ibook, I make very little use of its portability so I'm starting to long for a desktop again.

hi professor, I am going to get an imac 17" like you and i am going to wait till after xmas and here are my reasons.
1)----i am waiting to see what mac world is like (jan8th to 15th , i think)
    2) ---i want leopard, but if i have wait too long i will get tiger.
    3) after xmas and the january sales is usually a bad time for the sale of computers, i am hoping to get a good deal.

I have windows 98 right now and its driving me mad for the past two years. there is alot of stuff i want to do and cant. i cant even buy an ipod because of it. I cant wait for my imac. I even know the specs i want in it.

I will wait a bit more , but its killing me.

Ach, wouldn't you just buy now, and upgrade to Leopard later?

The iMac's have already upgraded to Core2Duo, so unless Apple want quad-core in their "consumer"-line (unlikely), it's got all the technology you want, right now. Unless you really want to wait for the 4th-gen iMac...
Remember that in the computer world, "I'll wait until the upgrade" is a slippery path which may end up in you NEVER upgrading!*

*this may or may not be an exaggeration...

Well, thanks for the advice folks, but I decided to go for it, what the hell. Just put in my order for a iMac 17" 2Ghz, the estimate shipping says I should have it by Wednesday. Can't wait :D

Now's as good a time as any to upgrade, I figure. I had the money so what's the point waiting till what could be April for the next iMac revision when I could be enjoying it now. Any new form factor will bring a bunch of bugs with it and I don't mind paying for Leopard later. Besides with winter I'm more likely to be inside and using it. Looking forward to having an iMac again :)

In my experience the words "good deal" and "mac" don't go together very well, lol. There could be price cuts in new year from Apple, or maybe not. But if you're gonna wait around for a hot deal you're gonna be waitin' a while.

If you're a student you can order from the education store and get about 8% off I think. Or you could order via phone and beg for a discount, they'll sometimes give you one, especially if you're a potential new user. Just keep talking about how cheaper Dell are, lol. :D

I found an Apple e-voucher code from a few months back in my inbox. It got me about 80 euro off my order :D

Hey triple h, that's great, hope you're happy with yours. I take it this is your first mac right? If so welcome to the mac community :)

Mine got shipped yesterday afternoon. It's standard specs so its only coming from England and Apple pushed forward the estimated delivery date from the 22th to the 20th. TNT have it in Northampton now. So its looking like I'll have it on Monday :D

I'm gonna pick up more RAM before Leopard arrives. I only have 768 now so 1gig seems like loads. And I'm really looking forward to being able to dual boot windows, means I should be able to play alot of pc games, may work out alot cheaper.

a friend of mine (he bought a dell 4 weeks ago) just texted me and said 'you should have got a pc'

    Yeah I agree.

We have a Dell in the other room that mam uses mostly. The hardware isn't that bad (for the price) but I really can't stand windows xp, don't understand how anyone can genuinely defend it. It's just terrible.

Trust me, triple h, after a couple weeks using OS X you'll be laughing at your friend and his dell.

well my dad bought me it for christmas

the person who purchased it has to be a student firstly and secondly isn't the offer for 3rd level students not secondary school pupils?

Apple don't seem too bothered but yeah they say you have to be over 18 and have a student card. But teachers/parents of students can use it as well.

Well I'm typing this from my new imac :) It arrived yesterday morning, as apple said it would. Just spent the last day getting everything set up and replacing all my powerpc apps with universal/intel ones.

I'm really pleased with it, its a gorgeous looking machine and its great what you can do with bluetooth, isight and front row. I can now sync with my mobile phone which is really handy. Probably going to install bootcamp/windows during the week.

There seems to be a bit of a reception problem with airport however but there's loads of people with the same problem over on the Apple discussion boards, so hopefully it will get fixed shortly. It seems to be a driver/firmware issue.

thats great professor. i am just after coming out of apple and my imac is just shipped. by the 3rd of dcember i should have it, they say.

I ordered an ipod on saturday when i ordered my imac , i got the ipod yesterday.
I have been reading and printing off pages to learn all about the osx tiger

this is what i love to say to people " anyway going out to buy a computer will most likely buy pc, why because they are everywhere and they know nothing about mac's. But if they knew what i know they would buy a mac"

I have a few spanish friends that are coming over to my house to bring in the new year. One friend, carlos, works with mac's ( he makes music videos for spanish pop groups)and he is getting an imac 24" next week. He is going to bring software over to me and he knows mac's inside out and will show me a few tricks.

Hope you enjoy your new imac, triple h :) There's not a huge amount to have to learn, Apple make it fairly easy. You might already know this but you can track your order much better using www.apecode.com

Since its BTO its probably coming from Asia and will be passed on to TNT in Europe who'll bring it to you. Apple's shipping estimates are pretty good but their tracking is awful.

I just installed Windows XP on a 2nd partition the other night. Bootcamp is a really great piece of software, very smooth installation. It's really weird running Windows on a mac

I got my new 20" iMac on Wednesday nd its a nice machine - transferring files and settings from my old Mini using firewire was great.

I also had the Airport problem which annoyed me a lot. However I upgraded the firmware on my router (Linksys wag54gx2) and haven't had any problems today.

I also seem to have the stuttering playback in itunes 7.0.2 which is also annoying. I use an airport express for playback in the kitchen and the contstant stuttering drove me spare..

Yeah I thought this was really handy too. Although it did mess up some of my network settings and I had to set up my airport all over again. I've always found Apple products extremely easy to use but those airport stations are a real pain to set up.

Are you still having this problem? Have you tried updating your Airport Express firmware? You may also have something in your kitchen which is interfering with it. Like a microwave maybe?

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,904 ✭✭✭parsi

The Express is at the latest firmware and has been operating happily in the kitchen for over a year with my Mini. It seems to be an iTunes problem because I can stream audio using airfoil without stuttering. Though it has dropped the connection to the Express a few time today but yet the Express-Router and iMac to Router connection has been stable...
