i am thinking of buying a new digital slr and i am wondering is it possible to buy a new nikon body which would fit my old nikon F501 lens?
The lens is an AF nikkor 35-135 zoom.

    hi Paul

AFAIK the full line of nikon dslrs can use any f-mount lens.

The d200 even has a facility to enter focal lenght and f-value into it so you can use non cpu lenses with it's metering system.

eas is pretty correct there, well close. Any F-mount lens from AI onwards will mount with different levels of functionality. The D50 will mount an old AI lens (as it's the same mount) but won't meter with it. That's not terribly important in this context anyway.

That AF lens will work on pretty much any Nikon digital SLR, new or old.

The D1 and D2 series bodies (the pro ones - D1, D1H, D1X, D2H(s), D2X(s)) will of course also do what eas mentioned that the D200 will.

I think I am exactly right -any f-mount lens can be used on all nikon DSLRS....? no?

EDIT : mmm, I guess it's not recomended to use pre-ai lenses on new Nikon cameras, I stand corrected.

I just had a quick look and found this about the D70, I'd guess it's the same story with other models.

A few of the old ones would break the mirror when mounting. Some you can use with MLU, I think. Others just can't be used. Many can be converted (and even chipped). :) I've spent far too long reading about gear in the last few months.

Edit: In fact, this will be more useful. (Mostly) Full list of lens type/body compatibility: http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html
