Photo software for OS X?

    I think that the bulk of organisation software I use under OS X can be summed up with this script:
    #!/bin/bash

    IMP=~/Pictures/Imports
    DATE=$(date "+%Y-%m-%d")
    MEM=/Volumes/EOS_DIGITAL
    CARD=disk2s1

    cd $IMP

    if [ -d $DATE ]
    then
            cd $DATE
    else
            mkdir $DATE
            cd $DATE
    fi

    for file in $(find $MEM -iname "*.cr2")
    do
            mv $file .
    done

    sleep 2

    diskutil unmount $CARD

    exit 0

    :p

    That aside, what's goodly for handling 10k photos or so on an external hard drive? Lightroom is a fantastically versatile program, but it chokes on that many photo (it seems to load "live" thumbnails) and iPhoto is just a piece of muck as it doesn't perserve folders when it imports. Picasa under Windows is actually perfect for my needs, but using it would defeat the purpose of this exercise, and I'm feeling too apathetic to go out and pirate Aperture.

    Would any of you have suggestions?

    buy aperture?

    i.e. money offered in exchange for software products. I know it's a difficult one to get your head around but give it a shot :D

    And it's a damnsight cheaper than photoshop too! I can't help but feel that when I've got enough moolah together to buy a macbook pro next year I'll get a copy of aperture with it.

    well done for you I'm sure. I'd rather have a legal copy of aperture than an illegal copy of photoshop.

    that's very moral of you.
    so put the license agreement aside for a min.

    after trying both packages i would still go with photoshop.
    lets be fair here Photoshop is the industry standard and aperture doesn't even come close to the editing power of photoshop.
    but is suppose aperture is a very basic program to use and will complete the very basic photo editing functions so for the basic and simple option i would use aperture, but if you want to get into some serious professional editing from the industry standard editing software...then its has to be photoshop.

    rymus... have you used photoshop,

    aperture is a very basic program

    Aperture is a solution for professional photographers that gives a speed of workflow that a photoshop user can only dream about. Process 500 RAW files in Photoshop, then do it in Aperture and see how many days you save.

    Sure it wont have all the functionality of photoshop; CS is more of a compliment to aperture. If you need to further process a file, say more detailed cloning, dodging/burning etc, you can export to photoshop and when you're done go back to aperture. Not everyone wants to spend hours processing each file in photoshop, hence the workflow speed of aperture.

    Yes, I have used photoshop. I use photoshop CS2 on a daily basis.

    Its not processing software I'm after - I already use the Gimp and Photoshop together. What I need is something that will speedily organise upward of 10k photos on an external hard drive without choking and dying painfully. I've downloaded the Aperture trial and I'm giving it a spin.

    I'm not impressed, Aperture is very obviously a powerful tool, but its not one suited to my needs. More importantly for me, the interface is ass. I need to be able to work from the word go without having to spend an hour figuring out what everything does.

    You open Aperture and you're immediately hit over the head with a cryptic, cluttered UI full of unabelled buttons. In addition, there aren't many option to customize the UI that I can see - I can make entirely hide a pane and move around buttons, but I'm still removing parts that I need to make room for other parts. Compare it to Lightroom, which has a very minimalist UI where you can hide any panel you don't want and your workflow is spread over several screens, as opposed to being crammed into one.

    Here's comparision screenshots (click for full-sized):

    Impressions are formed and set within a splitsecond and my first impression of Aperture isn't favourable, so I'm installing Macports right now to get an intel build of gqview

    interesting.. I'd love to give it a go... first I must find someone that's willing to part with their macbook pro for a week or so :D

    Try giving iView MediaPro a shot. I use it for bulk metadata extraction but it may do what you want also.

    Im not reading all of this cos im too lazy but DONT Aperture!!

    Previous rumours suggested that Apple would pull Aperture a few months back. They have since changed their mind but could easily decide to do it again.

    LIghtroom is just as good... I have Beta versions of both and really dont use Aperture at all.

    The apps I use are CS2, and Graphic Converter (which is excellent). And Lightroom for RAW. Try GC, seriously.. you'll like it.

    i use photoshop/adobe bridge cs2 and iview mediapro 3

    i prefer the workspace in bridge but it's painfully slow and makes huge files in it's cache folder

    iview is quicker but doesn't work as well for me in previewing and sorting images

    It seems to me that the problem with a lot of programs is that they simply try to do too much and wind up bloated. Bleh. I just want a simple, high-performance program that will let me rapidly go through 10k photos :|

    I've gone back and played with Aperture some more and put a short spiel up on my blog here. Flame meh. :[
