Problem with New Dell PC

    Help!
Just got a Dell Dimension 3100 (from Dell - refurb)and sold it to my neighbour 'cos their ancient PC died. Set it up out of the box everything worked fine.
Got a call an hour later to say a blue screen error (bad_pool) popped up and system not working now.
Checked it out and no way to restart the system (not even in safe mode) so tried to re-install XP with the Dell CD - it won't gets about 30% through and starts saying it cannot copy the files to the system from the disk.
I tried a full reformat of the drive but same problem is happening. Can't contact Ding Dong Dell 'til tomorrow - any ideas - I feel bad as they bought it from me and I don't want them to think I'm trying to offload some piece of crap on them.

just off the top of my head, sounds like the hard drive could be screwed...do you have a spare?

It sounds like a hardware failure, in which case you can either take things out and swap them for different parts or wait t'ill you can send it back to dell...

[edit] if you have any linux experience you could use a linux live-cd to check for hardware errors [/edit]

Strip it down to just the barebones, RAM, video card and hard drive. Check the RAM out and see if it is causing issues. It certainly can't hurt but it does sound like the hard drive is ready to pack in. :(

Warranty? I know you can do this and get away with not telling them, but at least point this out to them.
