Have a client/friend with a PC that 5/6 years old running Windows ME, it is giving blue screens and crashing all over the place she cant find recovery CD, so it will require me to manually go in an figure out whats going on, its as slow as a dead tortise, I could probably fix it if i spent hours at it, but is it worth it what would you do, she says she cant afford a new PC and really wants it to work.

I'd personally bin it. Its not worth the hassle.

Sure she can afford a new pc. Dell do finance. She wont need anything special. So a 400-500 euro pc will do her fine. Or you could build her one for half that.

Format it and put win98/2000 on it.Thats what i would do,people are to quick to dump/purchase in my opinion as obviously its doing what she needs and why go into finance unneccessarily.

You would format and have windows installed in no time and just put avg/adaware/spybot on it and away she goes again.

Stick XP on it, once it has 128 ram it be fine for internet and email.

Rip out the HD to get her documents off it for quicker fixing.

Also if it is a <500mhz pc xp will not run too well

If you have the disks might be worth trying a fresh install of windows

But a new pc it probably the way to go, apart from word processing a 5/6 year old machine will struggle with most newer software or hardware you throw at it

I would say, she should bin the old one and just get a cheap second hand PC, which'll work fine for internet..etc
