Bring 360 back to point of purchase if it breaks

You may have seen me in such threads as "Call of Duty 3" where my 360 died just after I inserted my disc.
Anyhoo the 3 red rings of death appeared so I read through the threads and contacted MS spent 44 mins on hold and ended up with them saying its gotta come back for repair. While waiting for my email with rtns details I decided to ring Game to see if they would take it back. Lots of needless hassle...you can bring it back to the point of purchase (with ur receipt) and they will swap your box, no hassle.
Just thought you all should know.

This seems to the case EVERYWHERE except Smyth's Toys in Tralee where they refuse to exchange stating that the machine has to be sent back to microsoft. I think it's just because the main manager in there is a ****...

I brought mine back to GAME. I swapped it mainly to extend the warranty :)

    GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

I rang Gamestop and they just gave me the number for MS. So after January i have no warranty and my xbox is currently in Germany taking ages to get fixed. I got shafted!!

Has anyone here had their console swapped out by Gamestop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I bought a second hand console in Gamestop with a year's warranty. Was told if it broke they'd swap the console in the store for me. They're probably talking sh*t though.

well i'm going to email gamestop about their policy and see what they say.

By consumer rights, Gamestop aren't suppose to tell me to contact MS since my contract of sale is with Gamestop.

    I'll post up their reply.

It looks like you have the same problem as I have with Smyths. A toss pot manager is setting policy in that paticular store.

I went to Gamestop athlone and they just told me to ring microsoft.

Do you need to bring back everything?
I've a premium so would I not get to keep my hard drive? or would I have to bring it all back?

I'm getting worried my box is crashing while playing FEAR and during burnout (once) Was freezing originally then getting "clean the disc" errors.

I hope its not on its way out :(

I would also like to know if anyone has been able to return it gamestop for a new console. I have one of the launch consoles and while i havent had much bother with it, though i have seen the three red lights once or twice, i fear one of these days the 360 will stop working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

You are within your rights to get it swapped out at point of sale. You have no grounds for redress if you've sent it back to Microsoft once. You can no longer swap it in Gamestop (or wherever) after that. Put your foot down.

After 7 faulty machines from MS (they kept sending me dodgy refurbs) I'm getting a new one next week from them.

If anyone here has any sense they will avoid sending their machines back as its a viscious cycle that never ends. My history of sending machines back goes back as far as Jan this year.

    uh oh!!

Well i'll see what their head office has to say. If they say i was entitled to a swap out in store, then i'll complain and ask why i was refused that. If they say that my warranty is with MS, then i will know never to shop there again.

Would be swapping ASAP as it looks to be on the way out, wouldnt leave it too much longer. Mine was just a core box and all they did was open a new one in front of me and swap the box and nothing else. Mine was a launch box also so only had a month left but I did have to produce the receipt. Bloody releived sounding by all the shyte some people have had.

PS: never did get the MS email with rtns details....feeling blessed its worked out.

My xbox has gone back to microsoft in germany and has been there since last tuesday, I think there should be a system were we can just go inot a store and swap our obviously ruseded piece of crap for a brand new system without having to wait neary 3 weeks for a repair. I wonder will they refund me my 3 weeks of xbox live subscription while I dont have my xbox. Just plain silly. I rang xbox alos to see if my machine was repaired yet and they told me to just keep track of it on ups.com which is of no help because all that says is that my machine was delivered to the repair centre last tuesday and no update since. I'm gonna ring them again tomorrow if no update because I sick of waiting.

    Oh Crap!!
Anyone return to Game in blanchardstown?
Will they do a swap without bother?
Would my constant crashing be enough to warrant a replacement or do I need the 3 rings of death?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Kur4mA

My Xbox has been fine so far, but if anything does go wrong(touch wood :o ),GAME will be taking it back. I didn't buy it from Microsoft, I bought it from them and because of that fact alone, there is no chance I'd be farting around sending it back to MS.

Lafors, give them a call but would suggest making the situation to sound worse than it is. They took my word for it and didnt try to spark up the box. What can you lose

I got a 360 about two months ago from gamestop. I've noticed that every once in a while I hear a clicking sound from the dvd drive and then I get an on screen message saying that the disc is damaged or dirty similar to lafors problem. This then means I have to reboot the game and lose unsaved progress.

Its happened with every disc I have, about 10 times altogether.

I'm gonna bring it back this week.

    Anyone got any advice?

I presume I'll lose all my hard drive data?

    Cheers.

well i kept getting red lights for a day solid. it wouldnt turn on after a while but when I left it alone for a day it would play grand for a while and then get red lights again. so when they test it there is a chance it will turn on fine anyway.

Am I wrong in thinking that the shops "policy" is irrelevant? Irish consumer law is pretty clear.

Goods must be of merchantable quality – goods should be of reasonable quality taking into account what they are meant to do, their durability and their price

Goods must be fit for their purpose – they must do what they are reasonably expected to do

Goods must be as described - the buyer must not be mislead into buying something by the description of goods or services given orally by a salesperson or an advertisement.

If you buy a product that's faulty you are entitled to a replacement, or a repair. Its the retailers responsibility, end of story. This isnt america. If your told you need to talk to microsoft ask to see the manager. If he tells you to go to microsoft ask for the regional managers contact number. If he wont give it to you or the regional manager is also an idiot tell them all you are going to see your solicitor

Then go and see a solicitor. It probably wont get this far, usually they will have caved just to get rid of you but we need to stop being such pushovers when it comes to retailers.

Game tried the same crap with me when i discovered my new DS lite had 2 dead pixels. As soon as i mentioned the regional manager they couldnt get me out of the shop fast enough with a replacement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Kur4mA

    EXACTLY!

All this ****e of contacting MS directly seems to have caught on over here and it's BS tbh. It is the retailers responsibility to provide you with a refund/replacement and then they send it back to the manufacturer themselves.

    this is a thorny issue
Remember that goods bought over 28 days that are faulty, you are only entitled to a repair OR replacement, so a store can take the unit off you and send it off for repair on your behalf, generally it's easier for the customer to get the unit sent back themselves as they can get it delivered back to their home address.
Other stores just swap the broken unit and stick the other one back in the new packaging, to make life easier.
I'm sure some stores don't have the space to take back returns like this such as GAME or Gamestop so they refer you to the helpline.

    You’re dead right.

I'm in a tough situation cos my problem occurs sporadically and would be very hard to diagnose quickly.

I've gotta send it back to microsoft now and since their repair centre is now in Germany I can expect to wait at least 3 weeks to get it back.

Its ruined the gaming experience cos I'm constantly waiting for it to hang. I only bought it 6 weeks ago with PES6 in mind which was a big disappointment so I'm not impressed at all. Its seems that most people seem to have had some kind of trouble with 360's. I played ps1 and ps2 to death and never had one problem.

If I could get a full refund for all the money if spent on this piece of **** incl games accessories I would in a heartbeat.

Still no reply to my email to their head office.

I rang MS due to someone pointing out that if you don't ring them they send it back not repaired. MS said its been repaired but told me to wait 3 weeks from collection then ring back.

If anyone is getting red lights under random circumstances, beg borrow or steal a decent video recorder (i.e. not your camera phone), set the thing up and play till you get problems.

This is all the proof you should need. Why would you want to replace a working unit? If the clerk gives you problems (and he will) ask for the manager

If the manager says you can only get a repair which you dont want (and he will) say you want the contact details of the regional manager and a guarantee that the repaired unit wont break the same way somewhere down the line.

Trust me people they just want a quite life and they will cave just to get rid of you. Dont get angry, dont get arrogant (ie. "I know my rights!!!") just be unyielding and persistent.

Mine died last friday. The lads in Smyths replaced it no hassle at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭lafors

Mine crashed again a number of times last night, and even said to clean the disc during the superman demo, I couldn't help but laugh :)

Brought it back to Game in Blanchardstown and they replaced it on the spot. I have to say they do a brilliant job there (not just saying it cause they replaced my console), they know their games and are always helpful.

If more stores were like this there'd be less people switching to buy online.....and less people worrying about their broken xboxes, that isn't even their fault. As the lads sai about us Irish have a terrible attidude when it comes to complaining/replacing faulty things. Its not our fault if the product is dead but too many people seem to accept being ridden by retailers....and thats what grinds my gears :)

    I got a reply

    Hi Jonathan,

Apologies for the delay in responding, we get quite a lot of emails and it takes some time to get through.

As your Xbox 360 is in warranty you are entitled to a new console. Please bring the receipt, Xbox 360 console and all leads/controllers that came with it to the Donaghmede store.

If there’s any problems please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Eamon

    Damn it!!

    I could've had it swapped.

I got my 360 back from the repair centre yesterday exactly 2 weeks after it was picked up and last night I was playing Fifa and I got a dirty disc error on a Brand new game just out of the box. My system also froze while playing online but it also happened at the same time as the guy I was playing against he says it happens all the time while on Live so i am just wondering is there some sort of Xboxlive glitch that could cause this probelm. By the way I got a brand new console in the repqir centre because the manufactor date on the sticker on teh back said 06/07 2006 I got bought mine on launch in 2005.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭dave oc

Gummy Panda do you mind me asking what you told gamestop was wrong with you console? My warrenty is up next month and as i have a launch console i wouldn't mind getting it changed before it breaks. Mine has froze from time to time and seen the red lights once, but its not too bad yet......

    Thanx
    D

I just said i had a faulty xbox.

I explained my situation to the guy and asked what he could do as i won' get a new warranty with a repair.

    Just waiting for a reply.
