Mick McGowan had a great weekend in Scotland last week.

He made the final of the PDPA players tournament (losing to Adrian Lewis) and the semi-final of the UK Open Regional qualifier. He picked up STG£3,500 for his weekend's work.

Among the players who Mick beat were Terry Jenkins, Dennis Priestley, Dennis Smith, Denis Ovens, Wes Newton, Roland Scholten and Chris Mason.

Against Mason he won 5-0 and averaged an incredible 129.57 (over 43 per dart), winning 2 legs in 11 darts and the other three in 12 darts. Its thought to be a record average for a PDC event

Hopefully we'll see him have a good run in one of the majors shortly, that would help propel him up the rankings.

Yeah it was a pretty incredible weekend for Mick. That was one hell of an average. He seems to do well in Scotland because he reached the final in last years final as well.

Lets hope he can bring that form into the World Championship qualifiers (if he has to qualfy) and the tournament itself.

Mick certainly does have to qualify - although he will be one of the 16 seeds in the qualifiers.

His super form is continuing though. Played in the PDPA Players Championship event in Holland on Saturday. Beat Cusick 3-0, then Steve Maish 3-1, then Jason Clark 3-2, then Alan Warriner 3-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with Phil Taylor - his first meeting against the Power. The games went to a final fifth set decider and Mick won out!

Well done Mick. Beating Phil Taylor is any competition is a tremendous achievement.

In the semis Mick went on to beat Terry Jenkins 3-1, but unfortunatly lost to Colin Lloyd 3-0 in the final - each set going to a final leg decider.

There was another event on Sunday, but Mick didnt fare as well, losing to Dennis Priestley in the second round. Barrie Bates went on to win beating Phil Taylor in the final. Taylor had earlier beaten van Gerwen, who had earlier put out Barney.

Sounds like Mick hand an excellent two weeks. I can only imagne that e has been putting in the hours at the practice board and its really starting to payoff for him. To beat Taylor in any competition is a big achievement and he also knocked out some other big names. Its a pity that e keeps losing out in the final because it sounds as if he deserves a title for the form he is showing.

    Long may it continue.

But remeber he won the Irish Open Classic so at least he has one tiltle this season it would be worse of he lost that and became a "what if" player, he is fairly clocking up the rankinking points/dosh he's number 35 in the Order of Merit and 36th in the PDC Ranking points list, hopfuly we will be seeing him having a crack at the world title in a few years.

Mick McGowan's great form continues. He's just won the Vauxhall 128 Classic. Field included the likes of Lloyd, Manley, Mardle, Baxter, Mason, Scholten. He beat Scholten himself and cruised the latter stages winning the semi 5-1, and the final 6-1. He averaged over 100 in the final and hitting maximums in the 7 legs. £2,400 in winnings for Mick. Great stuff. Another event today (Saturday) but the big one for Mick in the World Quailfiers in the first weekend of December.

Mick has excelled again. Can't wait for his clash with Taylor, I think he has a chance if he can get some early legs. He knows that he can beat Taylor, thats half the battle.

btw. Does Mick have a nickname?

I heard Chris Mason being interviewed about McGowan. He marked the game when Mick beat Taylor. He said when Taylor realised he was in a game he was "trying all his tricks", but Mick wasnt phased one bit and just played his own game.

Of course Taylor is highly likely to win, but 8/1 is probably double what the odds should be.

They are great odds!! Think ill have to put a bet on McGowan

Paddy Power, not usually the best odds are giving 9/1. Definitly worth a nibble. Most players are beaten before they start against Taylor, but Mick is rock steady and won't let the occasion get to him. It should be a cracker and hopefully a nice little earner.

Should be on about quarter past nine or so.

Mason reckons that McGowan has a real chance of winning.

Good job i read this because i was thinking about backing Taylor 4-0 in sets at 7/4. I wouldnt chance it now because it looks like McGowan could nick a set.

    McGowan wins the first set!!!

watching it here, he is playing an amazing game but taylor is just unreal. 3-1 to taylor atm. now one up in the 5th set. Mick is averaging 101

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

2-0 down in the 5th, he hits his 8th 180, now up to 101.6 avg but taylor is still hitting 100avg. This game will stand mick in the future but taylor is unreal.

taylor wins but he had to work a hell of a lot for it. Mick did himself proud on any other day he would have won but taylor is just legendry.

If Mick was playing anyone else tonight other than Taylor he would hve won. He did himself proud with an excellent performance but hats off to Taylor for really picking his game up and giving us a masterclass in darts.

We will be seeing alot more of McGowan, mark my words. Second best player I have seen play in the tournament so far.

Mick at no 33 in the order of merit, money wise he is not far from top 30 Order of merit table

Mick has moved into the worlds top 32 after picking up £300 in last weekends tournament after reaching the 5th round. He has overtaken Steve Beaten in the order of merit.

PDC Order of Merit 12th February 2007

Mick was terrible today as he lost 10-6 to Hamilton in the World Matchplay first round. His end average was an embarrassing 73.58 which is one of the worst performances I have seen from a top32 player.

Stuart Pike said during the commentary that Mick plans to put his darts away for a month now and take a break. He is really struggling with his throw and thinks a break will do him good. What has happened to him? I really had high hopes that he would move up the rankings this year but he has got worse.

Anyone have any thoughts on what's going on? Does anyone on here know Mick?

I thought his darts were awful aswell, his T-20 throws were landing slanting to the left, couple that with too many fives it was a recipe for disaster. Maybe a break could do him the world of good.
