    Hi,

I started a new job here in boston 6 weeks ago. My hours were 8 till 5 and that was fine. I am working temp first leading to permancy. Well instead of been told i am made been perm here my boss who hasnt said two words to me over the last month told me the new site director is thinking of extending the helpdesk hours until 10 pm. If that happens my hours may be 1 till 10 pm.

Here is the problem it takes me 90 mins to commute to work each morning and even longer to go home. I know its a long commute but the money is alot better. There is no train leaving boston after 9. If i did those hours i would never see my wife( we just got married in april). So heres my dilemma perm job verses only seeing my wife at weekends.

I am already thinking scew this and going to send my resume off to companies. The worst part is i actually like my job as its my first since been made legal here in the states. With no american experience my choices were limited.

Of course you should send out CVs.

This needs to be said again.

If you get an interview, great. If you get an offer, great. You don't have to take that offer.

You've only been in the job 6 weeks and if it's going to mean only seeing your wife at the weekends then it's not worth it in my opinion.

Well if it means only seeing your wife at weekends you really only have two realistic options.

    1. You can either start applying for jobs now.

    2. You can wait to see if your hours change and start applying for jobs if it happens.

Either way it wouldn't hurt to start looking at the job market now. As reasons for leaving a job after a short duration go this is a pretty good one.

No harm putting out a few CV's around and see if you can get a few interviews. You don't have to take any job offer you get, and your current company won't be aware of you wanting to change jobs till you need a reference off them.

If I was in your position, I'd be definitely be having a look around. If anything you'll get a feel for what the job market is like.

    thanx for the replies,

the problem is before i started this job 6 weeks ago i was not working for 6 months due to pending immigration status here in the states. I was waiting to get my EAD card. So my choices were limited due to the time lapse between march when i moved here from ireland and september. My plan was to stay here for 6 months then get a better paid job with better benefits and hours as i would have 6 months american work experience behind me. I dont know if my irish IT experience would count.

If it's relevant to your current work area then once you get to interview you should be able to demonstrate to them that it does count.

I got a contract offer, the money is quite good but the hours are 2pm till 11 pm. I am shocked as nobody else in the office will have their hours changed. There are only 7 here working in the helpdesk. 4 of them finish before 5, 1 works till 6 and he only started a month before and then me if i decide to take the job working till 11. Is that fair? Everyone else takes liberties and leaves early yet i have drawn the short straw. Does that seem fair? I have adapted very quickly here.

If i take the job i will only see my wife at the weekend. There is no way i can do those hours. The last train leaving boston is 10:40 and i wouldnt be home till 12 as i would have to wait for another train. The reason why i choose to work in boston is because the money is crap for the same job where i live now, the money is boston is close to double. Why oh why is this happening to me. I hate the thought of looking for another job as we are supposed to be moving into a new place next week. All our plans are up in the air now.

My boss told me to think about it over the weekend. The arrogrance of some people. Does she think i have no like. She has three kids so you would think she would understand my situation. The worst part is that its not busy here from 6 till 11 pm and we would be lucky to get one call as currenly those hours are supported by an oncall person who works on the desk. It rotates every week.

Would getting a car be out of the question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,390 ✭✭✭galwaydude

Are you joking. I cannot drive. My wife needs her car for work. Do you know how much they charge for parking here in boston. Oh and did i mention when would i see my wife. It takes an hour to get to boston from where we live. I am on the verge of packing up and looking for something else. My wife comes first every time.

I am sorry for the outbust i am just seriously pissed off. Putting it out on boards is a way of letting of steam.

Talk to the boss, there has to be some solution that will suit everyone, maybe someone else in the office can alternate shifts with you? If ye can't come to a solution to suit then they are just taking the piss.
travelling long hours to work is the greatest waste of time, sometimes money isn't everything!

It looks like your problem is that your were last in and havn't got a contract stipulating other hours. Your boss has probably decided that they could easily hire someone willing to work the hours if you don't take them and that it's an easier option than trying to move someone else who already has a contract.

Your two options now appear to be:

    1. If your boss won't comprimise, quit and start looking for a job full time.

    2. If the terms of the contract are suitably loose take the job and move on as soon as something comes up. I'd assume you'll get a rather poor reference if you pick this one.
