    Read Irish Times article here

What are the chances, would you think?

What will happen to all the '07 cars pre-ordered for January 1? Will they be entitled to a rebate?

But, the government will loose money if they do that.

It won't be workable because people unless they are slow don't purchase a poverty spec model and then shell out another grand to get more airbags and esp into it, they instead purchase the next model up with all the safety gear as standard. An "option" would be VRT as normal on poverty spec and then no additional VRT on any upper end models but that would be too sensible to those in power who drive around in ministerial mercs which they are expempt from paying BIK tax on because they are "the special ones".

Does that mean that cars that have been bought new with multiple airbags, curtains, ABS, ESP, etc. will suddenly depreciate even more?

    Great.

Though, I do admit that this is a necessary step for encouraging safety features in cars.

Theres more than safety devices that differentiate the different level specs. Even on highest-level spec cars, things like ESP, curtain airbags are still an "option" on most brands.
I don't think anyone will be convinced that leather seats are essential to keep you alive....

I'm not convinced they add anything significant to the values of the car second-hand as it it, so: no.

This is so unworkable, as it's only going to affect special factory orders on basic spec cars. Usually safety features are either standard across a model range, or are bunched with other options, such as trim and spec upgrades. There would be so many loopholes too. how do you classify a safety device? and how do you stop importers cutting all the safety equipment and putting everything on the options list yet not actually changing the cars (cars not available without these "options")?

This is a total waste and is only designed to win seats for the fianna fail government. If they wanted to do something use fill they should get rid VRT entirely.

    Solution:

    a) Build basic spec car with cross ply tyres, no brakes, pointy stingy hurting thing in middle of steering wheel.
    b) Sell for €1000
    c) Offer car with proper spec (abs, radial tyres etc) for 25k.
    d) ??
    e) Profit
