Is their any point in advertising pub tournaments on Boards? Do Boardies ever play in Pub Games?. Just a question to try and get some feedback. If you do play in Pub games what are the best ones around?

I know some do, but I don't. Some pub tournaments run by the likes of JJP and VN have got good positive feedback and are to be encouraged as a way of introducing new players to the game in an environment they feel comfortable in. There is a market for them, but as you say they are not in the main populated by poker forum frequenters, but some do go along on occasion.

    The only one I'd ever go to is a VN event for two reasons;

I know they are very well run.

    I'm spoilt for choice generally

The best way to advertise for a pub event is to advertise locally with posters. It has to be the best bang per buck imo.

I started playing the game via Vegas Nights pub tourneys. Nick and his colleagues do an excellent job and the level his games are at in terms of organisation far outstrip any other pub - games I have played.

But, on a general level this is the wrong place to advertise. Players who post here are not pub - game players. They are generally people who invest a bit of time and effort in the game, wish to know what is going on in general in Irish poker and wish to steal some ideas from better and more experienced players in order to improve their own game.

Generally, such players have moved beyond the local bit of craic down the pub on a once a week basis. They are looking for longer structures and better value in their tournaments - with the option of a cash game afterwards. They will find this in card clubs or through specifically organised tournaments run by companies such as GJP.

When pub tournies are posted on this forum they appear decidedly bad value as compared to the alternatives on offer. As such, advvertising them here is a bad idea.

I would say that flyers in the local area is the best way to go about it. Ultimately you are looking for beginners who fancy giving it a go and don't know any better, not the more experienced type of player that posts here.

    its depends though...
if I spot a pub tourney in my locality with a decent starting stack, decent blind levels etc, it would pique my interest and I could kill two birds with one stone
    A) get my poker fix
    B) socialise with me mates

    However, this very rarely happens.
I think the arc in lucan was doing a weekly thing and posted here once or twice but I never heard anything else about it

    this is the poker forum

poker tournies take place in pubs as well as casinos

no need to discriminate against Boardies who may like to go to these imo?

freedom of information and all that....

Thanks guys for your comments. I agree i think pub tournies are good for the development of the game by bringing it to people who would not normally dream of visiting a card room, But who in time when their play gets better and their confidence builds will eventually move up from these events.

I have played with both Vegas nights and Jp Mcann and i think the Jp game is probably the best game on the northside of Dublin. I have not played in any of his southside games, But their are players in these games which certainly are probably ahead of of alot of players i have seen both in the fitz and se.

Anyway thanks again for the feedback.

    Hi Tony,

    Thanks for the good feedback.

I have to say that while boards.ie is a great source of poker players, in my experience the majority of the lads and ladies that post on boards are only interested in good blind structures with deep stacks and 20 min+ blind levels which just is not possible for most pub games due to time constraints.

I have found boards.ie very useful in advertising hotel and satellite games for the like of EPT which i run from time to time. which allows for a better blind structure ect.

IMO i have putting a large banner out the front of the venue and posters in the local area to be the best form of advertising your weekly pub games.

    Best of Luck
    Jp

    Hi JP ,
Willie Clynes here. I think you and Vegas night (Nick) do a great job, and ye work damn hard too to earn your crust, I've played in a couple of each over the last year and apart from self deal (which I don't mind really) and some maaaaddd calls, it's very enjoyable and ya can have a beer and be home early enough to stay up late. Would play more but I like the fitz on a Friday (when all these big tournys lately settle down)

So even though I like the deep stack tournys, I must say I enjoy the pub games occasionaly and if I do go again it will be you or Nicks. ( hmm maybe later :-)

    WP lads!

PS No offence pokerevents, the red cow is always an option :-)

im pretty sure pokerevents in the red cow wouldn`t call itself a pub gig, so you get out on a technicality.

FMP, meant to say wouldnt. it doesn make sense otherwise

    Hello goodluck2me,

I'm sure no-one in PokerEvents considers the Red Cow as a 'pub gig'. This tournament is taken very seriously and is run to the highest professtional level. I'm surprised the words 'PokerEvents-Red Cow-Pub Tournament' are put in the same sentence.

PokerEvents run Pub Tournaments all over the country. For further information on these refer to:

    http://pokerevents.ie/pubevents.asp

You will find our Pub gig venues, dates, structure etc etc

    Regards

    Stephen

For the record. I don't view the Red Cow Pokerevents as a pub tourny! I've played it from time to time and it's well run and enjoyable. Anyway I'm sure good luck was just ribbing you.

As far as I'm concerned a game of poker is a game of poker. so I'll play anywhere for my fix. Home games are best though....:)

OOps no offence granny I'm not saying our bi-weekly headsup matches are mere home games! (oh yeah she doesn't read boards...phew)
    :)

Alot of the Pub games are evolving to meet the demands of the regular punters who are also becoming better players. I rarely get the chance to play in casinos however I do play VN games the odd time and their new Structure in some of their venues which is a 50+10 freeze out with 20 min blinds for the first 5 levels or so and a Starting stack of 5.5k is a decent pub tournie with oppurtunity to play a bit.

The are also looking into higher stake games in hotels which may be more of the Red Cow level. According to Nick on the VN forum anyhow.

This is a typical comment from the Dublin posters, where I live we don't have a lot of choice to play in fact if the only tourney that is near me that I can play is a pub tourney (and a very good one at that) run by Pokerevents so I would welcome the advertising of any event. Not everyone lives or wishes to live in Dublin.

Steady on there Tiger. Point taken. My comment is more applicable to the Dubllin area than anything else.
