Unlikely, but like the lad in the article, under the EULA, you'll be entitled to get a refund if you don't install it and instead return the software.

I used to work for Dell , I believe that with their high end workstations you had a choice of either linux or windows , cant remember if you had the choice with Desktops .

Has anyone tried specifying this on a call to their sales dept ? They are usually pretty flexible i think .

Dell already have the N-series, which come with no OS installed, but include a FreeDOS kit.

Unfortunately they aren't available in Europe. :(

Great idea, I wonder if it will catch on? I read another good idea recently, that on first boot up you could select which OS you wanted to install from a list.

I know Micheal Dell has said for a long time that he would happily ship computers with OSX if an agreement could be met.

Dell have been selling servers with OS for a long time, or with red hat too. Many of the cheapo servers are cheap enough to use as a desktop and occasionally they have faster chipsets or can be tweaked to use PCI express. Main trick is to get a decent video card.

Dell sold some precision machines in the US a while back without windows, you saved about ~$40 BUT there was an identical bundle with windows with extra ram or free delivery for the same price. So no thus far while Dell have sold PC's without windows, they haven't passed any real cost saving on to the consumer.

Dell agreed to refund the cost of Windows, to the sum of just over 55 quid.
hang about that's a good chunk off the price off a low spec PC.
